Need Advice From TR Guys

So after years of messing around, and saying I'll do it next year etc. I am taking the plunge. I have all the components for the rifle on order.

What I need help with is to make sure I'm not missing anything on my list of stuff needed to head down, and shoot.

Sling- gonna get a Tompkins/Gallager
Jacket, glove, and hat- from center the target
Mat???? Fold up for more padding, or roll up easier to pack up??
Spotting scope stand- Ray-vin, Freeland, or Creedmoor?
Range bag- already have good bags(safety gifts from work)
Spotting scope- just waiting to get a chance to look through a kowa 603 before I decide.

Any, and all info on gear selection, or stuff I am missin from the list would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
 
My sling is a pulley type that I made.
A folding mat can be used as a satchel to carry your gear onto the firing point. Mine is from .centerthegroup.com. You don't really need a lot of padding, your elbow pads do that.
You will use your spotting scope for observing mirage, and seeing the shot indicators. I have a little compact Kowa which worked just fine. Have a Freeland stand with Ray-vin head. Works well for me.
Going to plot on paper, or use an EZ-graf?
 
The folks at Ray-Vin retired last year, so you're out of luck there.

For spotting scopes look at the Pentax PF-80ED, available from site sponsor Cameraland for a great price, especially if you take the "demo" deal. They also have one of the Kowas on sale, the TSN-602, if you're inclined in that direction. Mention the "Shot Show report" and you'll get it for $599.

Oops it's suppose to say center the group on my list. The Fold up mat as a carrying bag is a perfect idea. I don't honestly have a clue about scoring, is the easy graph the same as a plotomatic? Which is easier to recognize patterns?

I spoke with Cameraland, and was very impressed with their service. I will most definately be ordering from them. Just have to decide on which scope.
 
EZ-graf is the current version of the Plotomatic. Some shooters prefer paper plotting, others the EZ. Either can be made to work. A case can be made that the EZ is more intuitive, more visual, needs less interpretation.

Creedmoor Sports took over the marketing of the Ray-Vin stand a while back. They are still showing them listed on their website. I don't know if they will continue manufacturing them or not.

The "Pole Cat" from Creedmoor looks like a very nice alternative.

Is there a Canadian source, or where I do buy it from?
 
I emailed milcun, and their out of stock. Their going to contact me as soon as they have more in. Linda sent me the owners manual so that I could understand how the system worked.

I also spoke with Creedmoor, and ordered the Ray-Vin. They said they did some minor improvements on it, and are continuing production of it.

My impression of both companies. A+

One thing I forgot to ask about is hardcases? I know about the 1750, but was wondering if there's one a bit longer within $100 of the 1750's price range. All I can find is one 3" longer, but twice the money.

Looks like you have most things covered. Anshutz makes a nice sling, synthetic don't stretch and will not shrink if they get wet,

For plotting I like paper over Plot-O-Matic/EZ Graph or Ouiji board. I would say it is about 80% to 20% paper over all others methods.

Center the group mats are very widely used, I like the tri-fold mats the best.

Shooting bags...Just last year I switched from a shooting bag to one of Center the groups shooting boxes. It doesn't matter what you need out of your shooting bag, it is always in the bottom. The shooting box helps keep me organized on firing point.

Gun cases.
I have several. I use a soft case for going to the range. If I am driving a long way and need better protection I use a hard case that fits 2 rifles. If I am flying I have an SKB case with wheels that fits 2 rifles.
 
I can't take credit for having most of my bases covered. I believe that would belong to Mr Dobson. He's been a huge help in getting me on my feet, and running. He's bringing in all the components for my rifle. CSS R1, Borden tube action, Goliath front site, RPA Trakker rear, CG 2 stage trigger, and barrel. I told him to pick which manufacturer. All of that was a lot of time on the phone and emails back, and forth. With him being patient, and going the extra mile to answer all questions. When everything is all said, and done I believe I will be shipping him a bottle as it's the least I can do.

Maynard, I checked out SKB, and was impressed with the amount of selection. Just waiting on reply from the Canada rep.

What are peoples thoughts on kids joining? I have a niece, and nephew that both take after their grandma in being naturally good shots. I already made the offer to them both to get them set up. They're just nervous about it being all adults, and it's at the convincing stage for both of them, which might be a nightmare.

Depends on how young and how mature the kids are. We have plenty of Cadets both Canadian and Brit shoot our Provincial matches and the CFRC in Ottawa. These "kids" are as young as 14. My daughter started shooting fullbore when she was 12.

Plenty of adult shooters are willing to help coach get started.

Have you tried Paul Reiben at Range Sports Unlimited the Kamloops? I know her carries RPA Traker sights.
 
Action Clear or "Woody Engineering" from Australia sells CG Centra rear sights and they do ship to Canada. I bought mine from there a couple of years ago. The prices have gone up on them since I bought mine. They are a good group to deal with and worth looking into.
