got my first handgun en route via mail.
looking at small lockable containers like on canadian tire website.
some of the 25.00 fireproof 'safes' look like they may work, but when i saw one in person it has a sticker on it saying "not for handguns"
any reason why?>

any other sugestions on locking compartments for a handgun?

The Source, and more recently Walmart, and probably Costco have or had lock boxes that were marked as suitable handgun safes for California.

The main thing is control. When you are not there, no one should be able to achieve control over the firearm--access it or remove it from the address designated on the paperwork. If they can, you've lost control of your handgun, and that's a no-no.

in The Man's eyes is this sufficient?

That one probably wouldn't be enough if you want the gun without a trigger lock. However, you could put a handgun in there if it's trigger-locked. It looks kinda small though.
Canadiantire sells a decent plastic handgun case for $28. It's foam padded and fits 2 handguns easily. The case needs a padlock on it and the guns need to be trigger locked. The advantage is that you can use it for transport to the range too.
