need advice on .308Win hunting rifle

thanks for the advice about a custom gun....
I`m not so good yet to build one by myself, also I will not trust this process to the gunsmith....I`m too picky, all custom guns that I have seen have something that I do not like.
so, the time for the custom gun did not come YET :)))))
thanks regards
P.S.: please do not be offended by this :)

I can report that my experiences with Savage/Stevens in several models and calibres has been excellent. Their potential to shoot like custom rifles is certainly there - 1/2MOA or better at close range, sub MOA at 1000m.

They all need to be properly bedded although the pillars that come with the stock are usually excellent. The basic trigger is heavy, needs to be lightened and tuned. 2.5lbs is about min.

The Accutrigger is very nice and can give 1.5 to 2lbs pulls easily.

I am playing with a 11FCNS in 308 which will be my walkabout hunting rifle this season. Very impressed so far. 3/4" with Win 150gr SP from Cdn Tire. I expect handloads to go around 3/8" or better.

Balance for off hand shooting is superb and stock fits me very well (needs a bit of foreend stiffening though). The bolt on all new gen Savage/Stevens need a bit of work to get rid of that stupid jump at cocking but once done is very smooth. The center feed mag runs very well too.

If you don't mind the looks of the Savage, then a best buy. If you don't mind a heavier trigger and a blind mag, the Stevens is simply hard to beat.

The Tikka is also very nice (my next choice) from reports here and elsewhere and will run another couple of hundred more.

The Rem SPS I played with in a store felt very rough. Accuracy is more the adequate but so far range reports are not spectacular. This and the Vanguard are in the same price range.

I am going to load my Savage with 165grSST over Varget lit with a CCI or Fed match primer and use it for any grass eater I want to hunt.

Then when I am done hunting, I can swap barrel, bolt heads, stocks to turn this into whatever I want for the rest of the year.

about Savage...I have one Savage 10FP in .223rem.....good gun...sheep ammo - about MOA....premium - 3 rounds - 3/8" at 100m.....everything is perfect, but....this gun has extracting ptoblem....after a shoot, when you pull the bolt back, it leaves the shell on the top of the mag....doesn`t eject it :(
how can I fox it???
thanks

.308

Good choice the .308
There is better cartridges out there today but recoil will become a factor,my Rem Model 7 in .308,18" barrel with scope 1.5 to 6x Leupold and a composite stock all in weighs 6.7lbs recoil is less, than a Rem 700 I had made up in 7mmwsm, but if I could only own one gun the 7mmwsm is the one hands down to many other guns I have owned.
In what type of gun my choice is Remington, so many aftermarket things you can buy, and if you ever where to damage barrel, the action will bring you $400 plus anytime. i have never seen people looking for to buy actions on some of the others on your list.

Very nice gun. But I always bristle at the phrase "better cartridge". For my money, there's not much better than a .308. There are more powerful cartridges, but like manitou said, you pay in recoil. So I'd say they're not better. Just an option. And lots of cartridges recoil less, but you usually give up some killing power. Once again, not better. Just different.

that is WHY I started this thread :)))
I need the advice on the budget accurate hunting/shooting rifle :)
lots of perfect info, but waiting on something more practical :)))))
thanks

Well, I thought when I said good all around for hunting and target, that was being practical.

From a budget point of view the cheapest I've seen is a Stevens up at Epps, but the action was stiff and the fit and finish reflected an inexpensive rifle. It would get the job done, but, there are prettier options.

I don't think cheapest necessarily should be your first consideration though. When I say .308 in a varmit barrel with a good scope with good mounts, you do that so that you have a gun that you don't spend a whole lot more money accurizing. Another consideration I found that quickly became an issue was the trigger. The Winchester M70 had a trigger adjustment that 2 minutes and a screw driver and a little bit of reading online can enable you to adjust your own trigger pressure. This is important because if you do both hunting and target, you want a good safe pressure for hunting but also something not to heavy for target. Being able to find your own 'sweet spot' without going to a gunsmith or getting custom tools for is important - I guess this falls a little under 'end user customization' and not so much tweaking by a gunsmith. If you have a good quality platform you can grow into it as you shoot over a number of years without having to replace it with a 'better' one and with dual use you don't need two platforms and you can practice your shooting skills on the same system and config as what you would hunt with. So, from that point of view, I am saying its a practical choice.

Save your money and buy something you will shoot for the rest of your life - happily. Life's too short for ####ty guns.

If you want to get a gun that shoots a little flatter than the .308 same recoil, and is a bit of a hidden secret among us gunnuts, pick up a 7-08. You wont find ammunition for it at the typical stores like canadian tire, walmart, and such.

This leads me to the next reason for buying one. Reloading is a hobby that is very rewarding.

I picked up a stevens 200 in 7-08. If I were to buy another 7-08, I would save the pennies and get a savage with the accutrigger.

To answer your other question I wouldn't hesitate to buy Either the ruger or the remington. The model 7 might be a good choice if you are training lots of people. Because of it's smaller size it might be more comfortable to some, especially to carry. The CDL is another good choice. Everyone makes after market accessories for 700's so later if you wanted to customize it it would be an easy upgrade. I also don't think you can go wrong with a Ruger, compact or otherwise. Very dependable firearms and excellent customer relations. I don't have much experience with the Tika so i'll let someone else advise you on them. Good luck

I sold my Winchester M70 to a guy here in Alberta and I have to say I really miss it and probably will buy a new one when the opportunity permits... I have to say my Tikka T3 Tactical is a bit of a disappointment in the long run.

hi gents....
having Tikka M965 in .270Win, thinking about a bolt rifle in .308Win...
any comments, suggestions and critics about this calibre, brand of the rifle are very welcom :)
thanks

Many competative shooters use the 308 for a reason, its accurate. very accurate and the ballistics are near perfect, but thats for another thread. many guns shoot the round well but you will hard pressed to find a better gun than the SAKO Finnlight in 308 to give you the pleasure of hunting and bench shooting and doing both well. its light and if it gives too much recoil you can easily have a break threaded on the barrel, it won't loose its value over time and be your best overall value. Get the synthetic stock as the extreme changes in weather cause wood to move to much which can affect accuracy. Just my simple thoughts.

Winchester 70 Featherwieight in .308 (or 7mm-08) would be the bee's-knee's!

Slightly lighter an trimmer than a regular sporter but still got a 22" barrel and great looking stock!

Here's mine. Savage 10FPLE1A 20" 308. Leupold VX-II 1-4X20mm.

It's heavy. Great blind/parking gun. The accu-trigger is amazing, accurate as heck. I've been toying with the idea of selling and getting savage precision carbine, but this one shoots so good, why take the risk?

Still thinking about it.
