I am on a tight budget ($100-$500 really pushing it) and was looking for a .308 caliber bolt action rifle. Something with a synthetic stock, blued or black barrel. Something that is easy to find parts and accessories like stocks.

Also does anyone know where to get bell&carlson stocks from here in Canada?

You mite be better off with a good .22 fun to shot cheep to feed I think every one shod own one .22 LR.

Theres something strange about your post.

1- you have a 100-300$ budget
2- you want a bell and carlson stock.

At that price, I would get a savage axis. They are the best bolt action 308 at that price, and will shoot better than you can.

MSRP is 363, 415 with scope.

Or look for a used 308....

Soooo, I guess your looking to buy a rifle and as money allows upgrade it. You will be well served by a Savage 10/11/12 or Remington 700. Since you have no money to spend I would suggest looking for a used Stevens 200 or a Savage 11 package rifle (I feel your pain, I can't wait till they start pouring concrete again...never thought I'd say that). You should be able to find one used well under your cap. You may have some trouble finding one in a short action in .308 though. I'd suggest you start with .223 as cheap ammo is easier to find and you can shoot it all day with no discomfort.

Assuming your a new shooter Carverk's suggestion is prob the best. You can get a decent .22LR and a whole pile of ammo for $500.

A stevens 200 in any calibre can be converted to whatever cal you want with buying a used barrel and if needed a bolt head. As for the bell & carlson stocks send Jerry a message at mystic precision, deal with him for tons of my needs as he gives service second to none! He is a wealth of information and can help you with anything from parts, reloading supplies and even just a push in the right direction.

You are correct I would eventually like to upgrade the rifle, as my budget is 100 - 500 Dollars. Although I didn't consider .22 or .223, I was stuck on wanting a .308 cal(I kinda get that one track mind sometimes). I will look into the different rifles that have been mentioned and check at wholesale sports or one of the gun shop on the island here. I could also check the gun shows that happen every once and a while. Thanks for your information

look for a stevens 200 , or even a plain jane savage in 308 ( pretty much the same action , you might be able to get the accutrigger with the savage ) .

then when you have the cash , phone mystic and talk about possible upgrades .

if you don't reload , now is the time to get into reloading , it will save you a ton of money .

For your budget, a .22 sounds like the only reasonable option if you plan to actually shoot the thing. You can buy a Savage Axis with scope for less than $500, but factory .308 ammo is close to $1/round. Even cheap .223 is $0.40/round. How much will you be shooting at those prices? You also don't say what you want to do with the rifle. If you are simply punching holes in paper, buy a Savage Mk.II rimfire rifle and put a decent scope on it. All in you will be less than $400, ammo is ~$25/500 rounds and you can easily shoot out to 200yds and hit clay pigeon sized targets in good conditions.

Shooting .22LR out to 200yds is like .308 out to 800-1000yds, so you can challenge yourself to shoot better for pennies instead of $100 bills.

I will be using it for both punching holes in paper at any where between 100-600 yards and eventually Deer hunting on the Island here. I think for now i'll put this project on hold and get a .22 cal.

savage 11 series are close to 700 just the rifle, thats why I suggested an axis.. 450$ with 3-9 scope included. Cheapest you can get.

Or, get a .22 while you accumulate more cash... cause unless you buy tons of ammo, 308 is 1$ a pop.....

.22 is the best to shoot alot for cheap... ive shot proabbly 2000 22lr rounds.... and it costs like 25$ for 500 rounds.... cheap.

This one in .223. The finnish is a little better than the Stevens and I think it has a detachable mag.

A few others have mentioned the Axis. I'd guess it's just as good for your purposes as the Stevens or the 11, I've just never held one so I can't comment one way or the other.

If you can get the Savage for $329 I'd grab it. If it's used in good shape it's a good price, even better if that's new. I still believe .223 is your best option. You should also keep an eye out for an entry level reloading package. If your going to do any serious shooting you MUST reload. I picked up a Lee Challenger kit on sale for something like $55 US a few years back (I think it's $118 US now at Cabelas). I just wanted the press but found most of the stuff that came with it was useful (hillbilly progressive :D). It's junk but it will get you started. You would need a better scale though and a hand priming tool would be a good idea as well.

Stevens 200. You really can't lose with one. If you want PM me and I'll email you some pics along with the build specs of one of my projects using one :).
