Need advice on buying my first shotgun

Can't go wrong with an 870!
When you start trap shooting, make sure you lube up the choke tube with either oil or grease ( your choice) and use the full or modified choke tube.
Most people recommend the modified tube for starters, but the full will work just fine.
DON'T tighten the choke tube down like a wheel nut!!
When a tube is properly lubed up and gently tightened down, it will be fine if it was properly built.

 Oil or grease the choke tube?! I was shooting yesterday with the factory improved choke installed. Am I hurting it by not oil soaking this thing? I bought a can of G96 and I have been using it to service and lube my guns, will that do? Or is grease recommended?

Oil, grease, anti-seize, etc. all will work fine. It's not a moving part, so all you're doing is preventing the threads from corroding.

X2, but also, a lubed part will stay tight better than an un-lubed part.
What happens if the tube lossesns up, is something called "choke creep:. where the tube gets loose then after repeated firings, locks up and then you have a very bad situation that normally requires a gunsmith to remove it!
But like Gporuse Man stated, it doesn't matter so much WHAT ypou use, but tha you use it!!:)

I am:

Sun burnt
Exhausted
Dirty from mud
Short 150 shotgun shells

and

SMILING FROM EAR TO EAR!

Went trap shooting at a local out door range with my new pump. I have never had such a good time shooting my shotgun! Factory improved choke, rem 870 pump, 2 3/4 - No7 @ 1oz, and I was nailing 4/5 clays on the early side. And was hitting 2/5 when I let them fly out for a bit.

I can not wait to get a tighter choke, and shoot more clays.

This guy, is addicted. :D:D:D:D

Thank you everyone, your advice has paid off marvelously!

Hey Dan,

Its Howard, the previous president of gtasentra.

I bought my first shotgun recently as well. I picked up a mossy 500 spx and have already started modding. If you don't mind me asking, where did you go to shoot your shotty ?

i own a 20 ga and a 12 ga both great guns and didnt pay much i used the 20 bolt for skeet no problems. it is what you prefer and how much you wanna spend on shells as 12 ga is cheaper.

My best advice would be to make sure you buy a gun that fits. If you don't know how to tell if it fits, try asking the salesman or searching online.

A real man need a Shootgun

Buy a pump action like a Mossberg 500 or Remy 870.

You can't go wrong and it will be your buddy for ever

Is that a "real man" in your Avatar? No wonder a Mossberg 500 or Remy 870 don't do anything for me. :p

Well I'm going choke shopping today. I think I'll step it up to a full choke, seeing as I dont feel like shooting copper coated iron pellets at clay pigeons, from a turkey choke.

However, I want to buy a box of 3.5" super magnums. See how that goes.

Don't be too much in a rush to get a Full choke. Imp Cyl is a wingshooter's friend. As your confidence builds you can tighten up the choke, but the only place I use Full is on the Trap field, and as often as not I'll use the Mod barrel.

Tell us how you like those 3.5" shells. (Not allowed on the trap field, however).

Good stuff, I'm not a shotty expert in any way, but I think you made a good choice on the 870, an affordable, reliable shotgun to learn how and what you want and need in a gun. You go anywhere away from the middle of the road you may lose some of the utility that you might be wanting, a basic pump gun will do almost every thing you could ever want a shotgun to do, basically.

From here you can see what it is that you really want and need in a shotgun then find a better one to suit you. I like what Grouseman said about buying a sports car when you barely know how to drive, you won't appreciate what you have if you don't know how to handle it.

Good choice.

You poor, poor b@stard! The shotgun bug has bitten you deep and there is no known cure :p. It'll be all a blur until one day you find yourself up to your ankles in empty hulls and surrounded by shotguns, choke tubes and reloaders. BTDT. Enjoy yourself.

If the money allows get a mod and a full choke. You'll use them eventually. Start with a flat of target loads for now. You'll need more later. Buy the Remington Gun Clubs if you can. Better reloading hull.

Enviously, John
