Duck, goose and predator calls...

Think I made a silly impulse buy. I was at Wholesale Sports and bought some Knight & Hale calls. The double duck call pack with the DVD and the Double Cluck goose call.

I've only ever jump shot ducks so I want to try to call them in. But the DVD is WORTHLESS!

 Don't get me started on the DVD. 2 mins of them talking about "the magic art of calling" and 53 mins of their TV show with them hunting ducks.

I've also read bad stuff (after I bought them) about these 2 guys and their calls. To me, they don't sound very good. Now I know what your saying, I've got to learn. But I don't see how they could sound right at all

Went on youtube and watched tonnes of videos. The duck calls, are not terrible. I think with some practise i could ... The goose call it seems impossible to get the right sound out of it. :( Seriously.

So, before I go out and waste more money what brand of calls has a decent reputation that aren't impossible to learn on?

I see that Buck Gardner are pretty reasonably priced. Opinions?

Electronic calls are not an option. What are some good suggestions?

Thanks

Try a Buck Gardner Double Nasty (Ducks) to start with - one of the easiest calls to blow and gets good results IMO.

The Canada Hammer from Buck Gardner is a good place to start with a single reed, but it is NOT EASY. The only single reed that I've found to be substantially easier to blow and nice sounding is the Goose Whisperer from Winglock calls.

None of these calls will break the bank, and all will do the job.

BTW - I started with all Knight and Hale calls - thought that I was "bird-calling handicapped" until I threw them away and bought some better calls. They are garbage IMO.

Good luck and have fun! Practice, practice, practice!

check out duck hunting chat and goose hunting chat for info on calls. I bought mine on ebay because the calls I wanted were not available in Calgary.

Likewise I had bad experience with K&H calls and videos.

try the GK calls. using a duck call is way easier than a short reed goose call. get a good dvd on calling and practice practie practice. Bucky

Lol, you bought a call, and can't woprk it right out of the box, so your solution is to spend more money on more calls?

Practice my friend. You're obviously not going to have the same skill in 5 minutes that the dudes on TV have after years and years.

Plus, you've got to remember that things sound different once recorded and then uploaded to youtube, the sound you hear thetre depends entirely on their equiptment and upload software.

I've got the same call set, and am far from a pro, but I've been able to turn the odd flared group of ducks with it.

@Skippy

Thanks but I knew it wouldn't take long for someone to post something like that. I even said so in the initial post. I guess you missed the part where my solution was to do more research, by getting advice from the experts, before spending more money.

I have said that the duck calls seem to be alright but not great. Could work I suppose with practice.

The goose call however seems damn impossible to get any sound out of it that resembles anything at all. Not for lack of trying. And I don't mean that I can't make it sound right. I mean that I can't make it even come close to a goose at all. More like a dual tone, high pitch whine. It does not seem to matter what I put into it. The same sound comes out.
Broken? Tuning? Poor call coupled with lack of skill?

So, anyone have advice on a goose call that a person can learn from?
Because this thing seems way off to me.

How about a howler and rabbit distress ?

Goose call is a little more tricky. Get your duck call down first, and practice cutting off air btw each quack. When you have more air control, it'll be easier for you to doooo-itt on the short reed.

Garbage calls

Fact is a lot of the calls on the market now are simply garbage. I think it would be worth a seperate topic column for members to post results of purchased calls by species.
Ya, ya, some open reed calls take a bunch of practice and personally those diaphram calls make me gag. I'm talking about calls that are made simply to "blow".
I've got some that are really, really good, and some that were nothing more than a waste of hard earned money.
I'll start:
The Lohman Cow Moose Call can't be beat.
Same can be said for the Primos Antelope Call,
The Knight and Hale "Ol' Yelper" turkey call,
the Faulk's Goose/Duck call works good on ducks,
and the Primos "bear/coyote buster" seems to work on both coyote's from a distance, as well as mulie does.
Those are the good ones I've found so far.
Unfortunately some of the others I've bought are nothing more than repackaged calls for another species, and if you think otherwise you're welcome to buy them from me at 1/2 price. PM me and I'll send you a list.
Don't mean to sound snotty, but I don't like being taken.
