Hi guy's I'm flying west jet from Ontario to Saskatchewan hunting and was wondering if anyone could give me any good advise or some tip's. I was wondering if I should use a hockeybag instead of a suitcase for my hunting gear and I am under the impression that your gun case has to be locked up and gun locked and registration certificate then your good to go. I was also wondering the best way to get your trophy back if I'm fortunate enough to shoot one. It will obviously be caped out and frozen but what would you do with the antlers. Would you split the skull cap to make them easier to pack. Any info would be great
Thank's marc

I used a hockey bag and a day pack for carry on.
We split the antlers and stuff each one in game bag and wrap them in saran wrap(they were still in velvet). After that, you must package them in some kind of containers or else WJ will not except them. We used cardboard and packaging tapes.
That was caribou antlers. With WT deer, you will probably get away without splitting them.

Hey Marc it is easy to fly these days. Locked case lock your gun ammo in a seperate bag obviously not carry on. As for bringing your trophy back it too is easy. See a local taxidermist have it caped and the antlers cleaned and split buy a tote at walmart drill four holes through the lid and zip tie it. The new law states your skull has to be cleaned properly that is why I recommend using a taxidermist to help prepare it for you it usually only costs about $40.
Best regards
and good luck

I brought a mtn goat cape back about a month ago and it was frozen , double bagged and taped up in a cardboard box that went as checked baggage- just had to sign a "not responsible for spoilage" form. I took a big hockey bag as well and a lockable heavy duty gun case.

Don't be surprised if you get pulled out of line and swabbed for gunpowder residue on your carry on. My camera bag was pulled out and swabbed and inspected rather closely-much to my surprise.

Same thing happened to me there and back.
I asked what they were looking for out of curiosity. He said that my bag Had gun powder residue and that is common with traveling hunters. What they were looking for is C4 and high explosive. The guy was very cool about it. If that happen with the US custom, I would of expect more trouble.

Thank's guy's for all the great info. I really like the idea of the plastic tote. I think I will probably end up useing a hockey bag for my hunting gear and a suitcase for my clothes. I guess the only other thing I'm worried about is after I'm done hunting with th outfitter I have 2 nights in the hotel and they are telling me they have no frezzer for my cape. And also do you tell the airlines that there is a cape and antlers in your tote.

Thank's marc

I'd you are going to use a gun case with plastic latches, I always found it good practice to put a wrap of duct tape around them in case they opened and possibly broke off. I now use an aluminum case with combination locks. Also a hockey bag is my preferred luggage. Haven't used a suitcase for any travel for 5 yrs.

Check the individual airlines website for instructions on traveling with guns or antlers, horns, skins or meat. In Canada and internationally it's hard to go wrong with a locked case, trigger lock, and unloaded with the ammo in a separate piece of luggage. In the States TSA rules will let you put the ammo in your guncase, but don't use TSA locks on a guncase. Flights that start out under TSA rules can end up under someones elses, so error on the side of more is better. The bigger issue with firearms are the laws in the country you are going to.

Hides and horns aren't much of a problem, the websites will give you the specs on that. Some call it "Hunting bounty" The bigger issue is game laws, import laws, export laws, customs, agriculture, CITES permits if needed and things like that. The airlines themselves don't really care what you're carrying if it's safe, under a certain size and isn't leaking all over the place

The Saskatchewan Hunting synopsis has a section on export of wildlife parts. The rules have changed in the last few years too. The idea is to make hunters responsible to get a permit before taking anything out. It is perfect regulatory law. Papers are everything. I got my export permit in Regina at the government wildlife office.
