Hello !

I am looking for a semi hunting rifle and was thinking 7 Rem Mag or a good old 30-06. Would probably go with 270 Win as well. I will be hunting deer, moose and occasional bear.
I know there is no such thing as a good all-around rifle but what make and caliber would you recommend for my application ?

Thanks in advance,
Igor.

Your options for a semi-auto 7mm is pretty much limited to a Browning BAR. Comes all three of your calibres. I'd lean towards the .270. It'd mean you could shoot the same rifle for ground hogs etc. anywhere in Southern Ontario. Even though a BAR is not a true varmint rifle, hunting varmints is great practice for deer/moose/bear season.
The other options, but not in 7mm, are a Remington 750, a Benelli R1 or a Winchester Super X.

Remington has some semi-auto offerings in the Woodsmaster 750. Watch the EE forum for the Reminton 7400's and 742's (older version). Browning is the only 7mm offering. Big bucks though.

...there is no such thing as a good all-around rifle ...

I will disagree with that statement. Things are better than you allow yourself to hope.

There is no one rifle that is ideal for all hunting, but I think you are looking for one that can be used for varmints to monsters, being some good for all, and probably very good, perhaps even excellent for some things. Certainly the calibres you mentioned, and .308 Winchester will be entirely satisfactory for deer, moose, and occasional bear.

I haven't used any semi-auto hunting rifles, but you are probably going to find that the uncommon owners of Benellis and HKs rave about them, that the rather more numerous Browning owners are almost all happy with their BARs, and that those who have the various iterations of Remington's 740/2, 7400, 750 report significantly more faults than Brownings, but that there will be Remington owners who very happy with their rifles because they take the time to find a load that suits the rifle and because they do proper maintenance to keep them clean.

I think you can find a good all-around rifle (and it's probably in 30.06.)

Winchester Super X rifle. A nice looking semi avalible in 30/06, .300 mag., 300 and 270 W. short mag.

I have a Win. M100 in .284win. which is in my view a great all around big game rifle. If you load your own ammo.

I have a Benelli in .30-06 :D It's pretty nice, but I will hunt with a bolt gun this fall. If it's going to be you're one and only rifle I would suggest a good old bolt gun in any of the calibers mentioned. Just my 2 cents.

Why doesn't someone make a semi in 45/70? Then i know what semi I would recommend, not so sure about those plasticky Euro semis.

Reminton 7400's and 742's (older version)
If you are even considering a 742 because someone offers you one at what you think is a very good price, be wary. The reason there is a Remington 7400 is because the 742 jammed big-time due to a design flaw.
If you want a semi-auto, Browning or Benelli. Try to find an older all steel receiver Browning.

M14 semi-auto rocks out on tuktu(caribou) as I banged one at approx 200 yards today ... waack! Fried tuktu(caribou) and onions and BBQ sauce with mashed potatos and corn is one awesome meal ... :D

Because no one who is in a position to make rifles for the commercial market believes there are enough prospective buyers who want the 45/70 in a semi-auto hunting rifle to make it a profitable undertaking, and they don't care to spend money on the market research it would take to find out whether that assumption is wrong.

You can substitute any rifle type and calibre and that is always the answer to that question.
