Hello All

Currently I’m trying to plan out the optics for a XCR-M (.308 model). So far every thing is going well except for my inability to make a decision on a scope. Wolverine Supplies can basically get me any thing I want and I want to only do this once so utility and quality are the defining factors on the purchase with out throwing money after tactical bling.

The Rifle is chambered in a .308 Win. cartridge so it has the potential even with the 18.5" barrel to reach out. So not sure if I should go low magnification scope or with a 4X to 16X scope. The optic has to have a iluminated reticule and either a ranging reticule or mil dot reticule. Any way here is what I have come up with so far:

A scope with a lower magnification with iluminated reticule such as Burris XTR 1.5X-6X with Burris PEPR throw lever mount. Can a person shoot both eyes open with this Burris XTR 1.5X-6X scope at low power?

Another option was the Elcan Specter DR 1X-6X. Not crazy about the reported change of zero from 6X down to 1X on the Specter DR 1X-6X. This optic I have read can for sure be shot with both eyes open at low power. Price is steep if it wont hold zero at low power in my opinion.

Basically what I’m looking for is the ability to go both eyes open at 1X or 1.5X with a iluminated target circle, dot cross hair or what have you. But the scope has to have a minimum of up to a 6X.

Then there is the option to go with a 4X-16X power scope and adding a red dot canted off to the side or on top of the scope ring. Not sure about that set up either.....seems more like bling to me but I like the idea of being able to hit targets up close. What are your opinions? GG&G makes a nice mount for this.

I will use this rifle for camping and imprompdue hunting get aways from work-early kind of tasks.

My experince is mostly around bolt action rifles and AR10`s set up for distance shooting so this close-range/mid-range stuff is new to me and I would appreciate your opinions.

Thank you & best regards

IMO the Elcan Specter DR 1.5-6 would be a great choice. Just to clear things up, it doesn't loose zero when you change magnification, but instead there is a small (usually less than 1 MOA) POI shift. This shifts back when you return to the magnification setting you zeroed your rifle on. So basically, zero the rifle at 6x power, so you have the small POI shift when you're at 1.5x (basically for shooting under 100 yards, where the POI shift won't matter), so it goes away when you switch back to 6x.

This is where I'am at to, having a hard time deciding on optics to go with my XCR-M if it ever gets here...

I kind of want to hunt with it so myself I'am look at a nightforce NXS 2.5-10 x 32 Compact with a American Defense Mfg AD-RECON-S mount but I'am open to anything really.

My inspiration came from this pic from some guy selling his optics in the EE

I really like the Hi-Lux 1-4 that I got from Wanstalls. Made by Leatherwood, the same company that produced the ART's for the snipers in Vietnam. Called a CMR (Close Medium Range) It combines an illuminated retical with an etched reticle for longer range - kind of a modified mil-dot. Figure it should get me out to 200 at least.

2 options that would fit this bill nicely.
1.5-6 Elcan 7.62 model
Or my favorite...

get a 2.5-10xx24 compact if you can, but yes it is a great light weight small scope.

As of tomorrow, I will be the lucky owner of that scope. Once I send off my EMT. It will be residing on my XCR-L when my EOTech isn't.

sightron sIII 8-32 going on mine when funds allow. can never have enough mag. i find mine to heavy to shoot standing without some kind of rest so i figure it should have a nice scope, also want to see if i can make this thing shoot long range.

+1 on the 2.5-10x NXS or the 3.5-10x Mark 4. Eventually you're going to want to stretch it out and you won't be happy with a CQB optic. Maybe even go with 3.5-15x NXS.
