I've been around here for a few months now. Currently I own a G17 Glock, and I was thinking what my next purchase would be. I'm not a huge fan of Revolvers, so I will be getting another Semi-Auto.

I hear alot about Glocks vs S&W MP's, so since I have a Glock, I wanted to get a S&W MP40. That way I get to try a MP, and i have a chance to shoot a larger calibur.

Also, I've always loved the Desert Eagle, wheather it be from movies, airsoft guns, or whatever. So I know I will be buying one of those for my collection sooner or later. Is a Baby eagle in .40 cal any good? Comparable to the M&P40?

To sum it up,
I'm looking for a .40/.45 cal pistol, any recommendations? under $1000 for now. Preferably new.

Since you have a G17, I cannot see there is a point to get another plastic gun becasue they are pretty much the same kind of thing. Always collect different breed is the way to go. STI does make inexpensive and high quality 1911 in .45 and 40. If you don't like 1911, Try Tanfoglio or CZ, they all make good guns. Baby Eagle are good choice but some people here do report lemons.

I saw a few STI's that were nice, but like you stated, their a little expensive. I rather buy a H&K SL8 rifle then a STI pistol, which is on my to buy list, but thats for the rifle forum.

I'll check out Tanfoglio and CZ like you mentioned.

Thanks,
Matt

In .45 ACP, your best bet would be HK USP 45. 1911 is another obvious choice, but a good one would cost you more than $1000. If you decide on .40S&W, I would recommend USP 40, Sig P226 or FN/Browning Hi-Power. All can be had for $1000 or less.

PolskaDude,

I have check MP9 over the weekend hearing so many good things about it.
Not impressed at all with that gun. Probably shoots, but trigger is nasty as well as reset on it.
Check XDs or wait for XD-M, both made in Croatia and imported by Springfield.
Also check CZ guns or Tangfoglios.
Keep your eyes on used handgun. Some guys buy many guns to realize later that they need money for something else and they place it for sale.

In .45, I would suggest the STI Spartan. My (new) Spartan with a total of 5 mags came up to a total of 823$ before tax and shipping from Armco (look up). I for one call this a good deal for a good quality entry-level 1911.

But for .40's, I'd suggest a factory refurb Sig 226. They might come up a bit higher than a grand after taxes and shipping but they're a good deal, considering that a lot of them are former police guns that have hardly seen any use at all. 900$ for a 1400$ pistol is not a bad deal either.

If you're going to shoot Production, the Baby Eagle might be the most competitive of those (sub-$1000.) models that you have mentioned.

If you don't intend to shoot Production, and simply want to experience all that is out there, I, too, would suggest consideration of a 1911A1, the STI Spartan.

In either case, good service is assured.
As everyone knows, Freedom Ventures - who sells both - stands behind their products.

P226 is not a $1400 gun. You can get a brand new one for under a grand.

EDIT: double post.

Where did you find brand new 226's for less than a grand? The only ones I've seen in that kind of price range are the factory refurbs with the blue piece of paper around the grip?

Because, well, I'd love to know where to find some inexpensive Sigs...

getting another 9mm is not a bad idea! ammo is cheaper than .40 or .45, and you only have to stock for one caliber. Beretta 92 is a nice gun and would be worth checking out IMO.

IF you want something in a diff. caliber I would skip the .40 and get a .45ACP or a 10mm (now that a real .40! ;) ) Taurus makes a 'loaded' 1911 for well under a $1000 even after taxes. (you can see it in my signature pic). Sig is also a good gun, but not quite my thing...
