Need advice on red-dot sight.

Burris Fastfire II is a good sight. Smallish but bright dot. Can take a real pounding.Weighs about an ounce and is a good slide rider. Mount fits in rear sight dovetail and the sight fits on that securely. Put a dab of nail polish on all the screws because they will shoot loose.

G17.

I spent a lot of time lurking around GlockTalk and some other forums and it seems the G17 offers certain advantages to building a plastic go-fast-omatic...not the least of which is low sticker shock. I just bought one from Gunnar for $650+

Trigger/action work looks pretty simple - and relatively cheap.

I picked up a barrel and comp off the EE and now I am looking at optics.

Seriously considering the C-More STS with a dovetail mount.

The key for me is to be able to do as much of the work as I can or buy 'drop-in' parts to help keep the cost down. The hard part is trying to be frugal but still keep quality in mind.

I am not worried about being the next world champ I just want to have fun.... :)

John

There is a lot of BS on the Glock talk and other forms when it comes to Glock trigger work. Take it with a grain of salt and be sure you don't disable any of the three Glock safeties.

That confuses me. So I'd have to draw, flip the safety off and then shoot in SA mode? I could be wrong, but it seems like firing DA might be easier...

Rob

Nahh....it's just a matter of practise. The safety comes off as the gun starts to come level....or there-a-bouts. Different guys have different opinions on exactly when to release the safety but it is definitely quick once you do the work to perfect your technique.

Try it - you'll like it :)

Ok, so I've done a complete 180. Picked up a Glock G17 and am going to make it an open gun. This gun comes with a replacement barrel, and a comp.

The C-More STS with a dovetail mount looks pretty good to me - would folks agree with that assessment?

Where would the very best place to buy the C-More be? I'm in Toronto, but online is a possibility of course! ;)

Rob

So the casings jump out just as far with or without the red dot in place?

From my own reload testing to get down to a nice IPSC friendly PF I found that there's not a lot of jam left to kick the casings out as far. I've ordered lighter recoil springs but in the meantime cut down the stock spring to make things work for now. Adding more mass to the slide cannot be a good thing when it comes to this issue.

Anyhow, thanks for being so gentle.... :D

Freedom Ventures lists the STS.

I am waffling between the STS and the FastFireII.

I think Hal knows his stuff on open Glocks so I am leaning FastFire...but I don't like the idea of removing the sight to change the battery.....so then I think the STS would be better because of the battery tray setup...and then I look at the price?????...and then my head starts to ache and I see spots before my eyes..........thank goodness for internet ####....:p....ahhhhhhh...that's better. Okay... where was I????...

Hal? Maybe the same Hal I'm getting my Glock from. And I didn't know about FastFire, so back to the drawing board to learn about FastFire!

Rob

Hal? Post 21 this thread! Lol...

Yes that is the sight I am looking at.

P&D sells them for under $300 and the dovetail mount for $60+.

A bit $ friendlier than the STS.....BUT....you have to take the sight off the gun to change the battery. A definite 'downside' :)

I guess it would depend on the battery life.

John

Sure but I believe you have to drill a couple of holes in your gun to mount it.

I am looking at that model as well as the STS and the FastFire. I like the looks of the Optima as well but I think they are out of production.

Where I shoot there a couple of guys who shoot this type of sight and they really like it. Natural sighting plane and they say they don't really notice the sight moving back and forth.

Worth a try in my book.

John

The Tasco Optima is now called the J-Point and has a plastic lens, you can get one from JP Guns. The Burris fast Fire II has a glass lens and therefore is better optically but you have to remove the sight from the base to replace the battery. The battery should last a year if you remember to turn the sight off when you are done shooting. You may have to re-zero after a battery change, no big deal. C-more STS is a little beauty, I tried one and I like them but they are pricey. Docter Optik is very nice too but pricey as well. The Bevan Grams Docter sight is probably the best but very pricey. If I was going to buy another slide rider it would be the Burris Fastfire II. Your mileage may vary.

Fastfire is a bit smaller
That's because the STS is the first "Mini" Dot to allow you to change the battery without removing the scope from it's mount (and jeopardizing Zero.)

Someone mentioned the Optima. I shot one slide ride on an open gun back in the late 90s /early 2000s. Rather, I should say - I shot 4. One was always at the shop being repaired, one was en route to or from the shop, one was on the gun and one was in my bag waiting for the one on the gun to die. Reliability was horrible. As was the plastic lens that very quickly got distorted. Glass is the only option on a scope lens.

The STS is configured as a scope and then it has mounting options you add to it. They are:

Since A Nova Scotian; Matt McLearn won the IPSC World Championship and USPSA Nationals in 1993 with them, C-More sights have been the cadillac of pistol red dot sights. 95% of Open Division Shooters use them.

This year, Eric Grauffel annouced on the IPSC global village he was going to run the STS instead of the slide ride.

We're Canada's C-more distributors - I'm happy to answer any C-More questions you might have.
