Need advice on rifle optics please....

I am seriously considering mounting a 'red dot' optic or something like that for
my .458 X 2 inch calibre, FN Mauser bolt action. It's drilled and tapped for scope mounts. I want to see if I can get anything, other than a 'standard' scope.
I am presently considering a lit reticle/suspended dot optic, with hopefully a 3 power option, for an add-on magnifier. Lightweight prefered, and long eye relief is a must. Robustness, without question too. I don't mind paying for very good quality gear.
As one can guess, this will be for short/medium range hunting of big game.
As an 'extra' I wish to have an iron peep back-up intergrated into, let's say the mounting base. But I am open to other good ideas.

I would like some informed opinions please, from hunters/shooters, before I spend any cash.

You could mount an EOTech or Aimpoint on it at the front scope base which would give you a clear access to the action and the long eye relief you want. That would leave the rear base available to mount a NECG peep sight. I would either go with a red dot sight or a low powered scope. IMO the 3x booster will be a major PITA on your rifle.
 
Look at the nightforce 1-4x24 3 inches of eye relief, works almost as good as a straight red dot and gives you up to 4 power magnification. if you use the burrris high bases they have holes in them that will allow you to still use your BUIS. this is the set up you are looking for.

Better yet if you can get a larue quick detach mount you will better off assuming you are going to be hunting dangerous game and want the option of having the optic on or off. If that is your intent I don't think you can get a better optic than this one. I have one, its crystal clear a true 1 power, which is a major engineering feat and is really a wonderful optic. its the one I wouldn't sell. TSE a site sponsor has one in stock I believe.
 
One last comment on the NF, it can take the recoil of that gun all day long and NEVER loose its zero

I just did some on-line testimonial reading.
I wanted and did confirm the 1-4 X 24 has the lighted reticle as an option.

At first I wanted an Aimpoint badly, but my biggest beef with those products, is lack of magnification.
(except for the extra 3X add-on monocular, which is too big IMHO)

I should of guessed, I would end up with another NF. A 12-42 X56 NXS, is sitting at home awaiting my first F-class rifle purchase.
Just have to wait 'til Christmas for this one! :)
 
Brutus, the 1-4 and 2.5-10 NF are the only ones with an adjustable NF optics where you can adjust the brightness with a dial on the side of the scope all the rest have to be done with a little screwdriver inside the bat compartment. If you are big game hunting it really is the cats ass.
