Hey all,
I'm a broke-ass student but want to get a cheap single barrel for shooting clays. I was going to get a used cooey 12ga single barrel for $75, but just found that Le Barons has a Stoeger single barrel on for $119. It has a 3" chamber, and screw in choke tubes. Seems a bit more versatile to me.

How are these? Is the action solid? It says you open the action by pulling back on the trigger guard... does this form work well? I've only ever used the break-actions that had the switch behind the hammer.

Also, do I have to try and track down Stoeger choke tubes or will Remington and other brands fit?

Thanks guys! :)

gun for sporting clays

You'll need either a double barrel or a semi if you want to shoot sporting clays, as pairs form the majority of the game..you'll only be able to shoot trap if you choose organized clays ....in a pit any single would do...I'm surprised somebody hasn't offered this info.....Mule

If you just want to shoot trap recreationally - not sporting clays - one of the single shots would work. You won't need a 3" chamber, although tubes may be useful.
If you are in Ottawa, go past Gunco on Colonnade. Jason may have a pump shotgun for not much more than the Stoeger single.

Yeah I just shoot recreationally. I'd like a double barrel but it's out of my price range at the moment. Once my tax return comes in spring I've budgeted for an 870 Express... this is basically because I want a break-action and I want something to shoot for the winter ;)

Thanks for the input guys :)

I don't think you'll enjoy using one of those single shots for anything more than 25 shots. Because they're so light, even target loads give you a pounding.

Keep your eyes open; you should be able to find something a little more suitable for not much more cash.

OK I just popped onto Accuracy Plus's website (local Peterborough gun shop) and they have a Stevens 520 12ga for $100 in 'good' condition. Is that a single shot as well or pump action?

I just want something around the $100 to fiddle around with... If i only shoot a box of target loads in one outing I'm happy :)

A 520 is an old pump shotgun, pre-war. If its all there, and is sound and working, you could have fun with it.

I have been use my Baikal 12 gauge single shot for trap shoot almost 2 years and it work out for me and give me a lot of fun time, I couldn't see why you can't. Many gun store has used single shot at very good price, I do get a used Cooey 840 becasue this little shotgun has very good balance.

When I was in my teens I used a CIL model 402 with a slip-on recoil pad to shoot trap (cheap single shot) for years. It cost $26 at Can.Tire. I did take a pounding from it. I eventually moved up to a Winchester 101. Never did get a Krieghoff or Perazzi.
