On the first bad boy rifle :)

Could be any design/stile; AR, Kalashnikov, SMG or Carbine. Restricted is fine, BUT here are the two criteria’s;

1) calibre: 9mm or .223
2) price range: under $1000 (but the cheaper the better... I wish it was like that :()

I’m basically a handgun guy, and don’t know a whole a lot (yet)about black rifles  so if you have links or pics handy please post.

ps: I’ve looked at Beretta Cx4 Storm, kinda like it but not sure how I feel about all the plastic… input from owners is appreciated.

With your quite defined, and very restrictive, criteria.. there's only one choice
Rush out and buy your Storm... your only options are:
1) should I buy new or used
2) what calibre (9MM, 40S&W or 45ACP) should I get.
I wish all of my dilemas were as easy to solve!;)

i think there's an AR for sale in EE, for around $1000, its missing bolt carrier group, but you can find one for cheap (150) on here

I too was going to suggest Beretta Storm... you narrowed it down pretty good.
AR otherwise if you can add another $500 (or much less if you buy used as was mentioned above) :)

If I was going to do the Storm I'd probably go with a .40S&W version I think this time around. I've owned one, they are pretty cool.

if I'll get a Storm is will be a 9mm for sure, since I have a 92FS pistol (9mm)...and they go for around $950 so I'd be a new one...

did/do you have a 9mm version? why would you go with .40?

but what, seriously there's nothing else for $1000? nothing in .223?

A rifle should be a rifle calibre. I'm a handgun guy too, but I believe pistols should be pistol calibres and rifles should be rifle calibres.

I sold four handguns to buy an AR. .223 ammo is cheap, and there is something about the power of a rifle round that a pistol can't beat.

They are two different worlds in my opinion. Now I'm addicted to both.

Get an AR!!

are DMPS rifles legal in Canada?

according to the gun guide magazine that I'm looking at there should be planty of guns in the $1000 range hmm....

Buy a used Mini 14, $600! Cheap cheap cheap, that's what your looking for right? Wood stock, flash hider, sling, some pinned hi cap mags, that's what the last one I bought came with and cost! Plus as already mentioned .223 is also pretty cheap. The rifle's a mule, you can't hurt it, it'll shoot through everything! (I know lots of you beg to differ but you can say the same thing about all guns...)

Otherwise get the Storm. Plastic isn't all that bad. I put a cmore red dot on mine, some accessories and it's a joy to shoot.

Stop talking though, go out and get a rifle. Shoot it then let us know what you think of it. If you don't like it sell it and buy another. That's the joy of this game, lots of buyers out there...

I was pretty darn close to getting an AR180B... but you'll spend an extra $300 easy "coolifying" it.

I have an AR-15 and although I was a little concerned initially - It's now my most favourite firearm.

If I were going to do the Beretta Storm... I'd go with .40S&W so that I could have a .357SIG barrel made for it later and swap the barrels depending on what I felt like shooting. I bet a .357SIG out of a long barrel would move pretty good :D

You could also probably get away with having a 9mm barrel custom made for it.

Generally, when you go 9mm you are stuck with 9mm (can't go up).

What about the Ruger carbines? They're in 9mm and .40 aren't they? Around 700$ new?

Have a Ruger PC 9 (9mm) carbine and love it. About $750 new. Clever design, reliable, handles well.

Check around for a used Colt SP1 AR-15 or a Norico CQ-11 AR-15 copy. If you look, you should be able to find a used Colt in your price range. The Norinco should be had for several hundred cheaper unless it has been upgraded with aftermarket parts, furniture, accessories, etc...

You aren't going to find a DPMS AR for under $1000.00...AR prices have come down of late with the stronger Canadian Dollar...you might want to check into Rock River Arms or Stag Arms AR-15s. Good quality and not insanely over your price range.

Another option is to build your own, but it isn't something I'd recommend for a first time AR-15 owner even though you could conceivably build your own for under 1K using used parts and deals picked up off the exchange forums.

Stay away from the Ruger Mini-14...its way too inaccurate for its cost...get a Storm if you like 'em, I think they're FUGLY, but that's just my opinion. An AR-180B would probably be the best compromise for you. Save an extra month, put the extra cash with your 1K and pick one of them up. Cheaper than an AR, still shoot the same round, but best of all, its NOT restricted, so you can take it into the woods and plink away! Good luck with it!

From your criteria I would suggest the Storm. Great little carbine. Feels great and operates smoothly. The heavy trigger issue is greatly exagerrated. After a few range visits you'll be used to it's feel and be happy as a pig in sh*t. Ammo is cheap and available pretty much everywhere. I haven't fired my Storm past 105 yards but it's very capable of hitting 6" steel plates at that range continously. The "plastic feel" is a lot more comfortable than you think. Polymer guns have been around for quite some time. Ask any Glock (plastic, ugly but still sells for some unknown reason to me ;) ) owner.

Regards,

Get the storm if you like the look of it, 10 round mags and the option to install the long barrel (non-restricted) on it is nice, too.
Or you can get an AR15 for $1K or under if you haunt the EE for long enough. Personally, I think the Storm looks kinda um, odd, but I wouldn't say no if someone gave one to me. AR15s are infinately customizable, the only limit is your imagination and the good will of your credit card company. best idea, IMHO is to hunt down a good, used AR and then shoot, shoot and then shoot some more! if you already reload, great, buy a case of bulk .223 to give yourself some seed stock of brass, or beg/steal/borrow from any other source availiable. Then get yourself a few extra mags and join the ORA and shoot some service rifle with it!

Edit: Here you are: AR15 in the EE - http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=59453 Colt SP1 (think vietnam era M16) only catch is the oversize ("large hole") pivot pin. not a big deal, call Wolverine if you ever decide to slap a different upper on it, $8.75 for the part.
