Remington used regular gun quality steel in their receivers. For competition guns we used to sand blast the top of the receiver to reduce glare then reblue (hot blue) the entire receiver assembly. B-C blue is pretty mild. Try OXPHO liquid bluing, it is much stronger, in my experience.
