I am looking for a bolt action reasonable accurate. Plinking, but at extended ranges. I would like it to be tapped or groved for scope and it needs to have sights attached as I want to use it in a casual iron sight competition once a year. So what make and model am I looking for. I would like to spend between about 300-400 for the rig.

Which .22?

.
Using your criteria, there are several choices. On the top end, I would spend a bit more than the $400 and consider the CZ. There are several models to chose from, and they run $450-$500. Consider this........if you keep it for 10 years, then it only costs you about $50 a year.

On the bottom end, I would look at the Savage Mark II WITH THE ACCU-TRIGGER. These are in the $150-$300 range. The wood stock models seem to balance better than the composite stocked ones. The accu-trigger is a great help toward better accuracy.

Perhaps a visit to a local range or gun club will help. Ask at your local gun shop who owns a model of each, then phone that person and tell him what you intend to do, and ask if you might fire their rifle the next time they are at the range. Shooters are glad to help one another.

The only thing you have to be aware of is that people tend to put forward their ideas and are a bit biased toward their own rifles.........
.

Depends what's your expectation of reasonable accurate, and what you consider extended ranges and wether your the type of guy who always/only shoots of a bench or you'll be shooting off-hand...

Of hand, just about any 22lr with decent ammo will out shoot you (unless you are an olympic level shooter, in which, you probably wouldn't be asking the question)...

Just pick the one you like the best and practice!

Less of the bolt action rifles likely come with decent iron sights these days, in the expectation that a scope will be used. You might want to look at a CZ Lux. Its got good iron sights and is grooved for a scope. A new one might be outside of the range you give, but you might get a good used one for $400.00. Its designed for shooting offhand with iron sights, not bench. Trigger won't be as light as a Savage accutrigger, but it can be easily modified to be lighter and with less creep. If the Savage's have good iron sights, they might be the best bet for keeping it under budget.

Yup. I would say a Savage too. Before I got my CZ (no iron sights and more than you want to spend) I saw a MKII on the EE for $200 that had a wood stock and iron sights. I've seen a bunch of positive reviews of them on rimfirecentral.

Here's the ad I was thinking of.

I don't know the guy, but it's worth checking out.

Ok what I mean by extended is up to 300 yards. Which with a 22 is quite a long piece for the ballistically challenged cartridge. As for accuracy level one minute would be acceptable. Hitting at longer ranges has more to do with estimating wind then the accuracy of the rifle. Most of my 22 shooting is from a bench except for one informal shoot which is standing at 25 yards shooting 2 inch by 3 inch plates with iron sights. So I would like a rifle that is groved or has bases installed plus some type of irons for my informal iron match.

As for the budget I am not really on one. I would like a quality rifle, but I am not really interested in spending a couple thousand on a decent olympic rig. Just a really good plinker.

Keep an eye out for a Winchester 69a. Some came grooved for scopes, some didn't, but they're accurate and have a decent trigger.

For 'extended ranges', you need an optimum barrel length of about 18" or thereabouts for max velocity. Since you're using a scope, sight radius is moot. And it needs to be a stiff barrel for accuracy, so look for a heavier 'bull' target style barrel. And of course, an exceptional trigger.

Brno

Occasionally the older Brno models come available on the exchange forum. I have a Model 5 and a Model 1. Both are very accurate and good used models usually go in that 300-400 range. I have several later model CZ's, they are a good choice as well, but may be over your price range. JMO.

For the extended ranges you want to shoot, buy a .223 . You can get them with iron sights but few "bull" barrels would have them.

I disagree that you must go to a centerfire to shoot out to 300. The 22 Rimfire is surprisingly capable, even at extended range, as long as conditions are relatively calm, and you have good equipment and good ammunition that your rifle likes. I have shot several sub 1" groups at 200 meters with my 22 rimfires, and some groups in the 2¼" area at 300. You need plenty of elevation capability. [I use a 25 MOA base on my 40X] One thing you need is practice, practice & more practice. Of course, with the rimfire that practice is relatively inexpensive, so is easy to accomplish. In one thread he says $300-400. then next he is not on a budget. I can assure him that a gun capable of 2" at 300 yards cannot be gotten for that amount $300-400. A 40x scope would be twice that amount.

a cheap .223 can get him what he wants and at about the same costs of ammo as he would pay for the special ammo produced like match. Long rifle by some of the ammo companies just do not have the accuracy capabilities.

I have shot out to 300 yards but certainly not with a $300 dollar .22 and still was able to hit a decent group in less than ideal conditions.

I ended up buying a TOZ 8 again from ellwood epps. I sold my last one to predator. With it and dynapoints I was able to group into 6 inches at 300 yards. Some of you folks think that it takes a centerfire to get there but a 22 will make it there.... eventually.

I shoot mine at the 250 meter steel at my range all the time. It does eventually get there... Goes something like this.

"POW"....
Put gun asside...
Pull off hearing protection so I can hear the ding (in a minute)...
Sip coffee....
Wait for it....
Far off in the distance, very faintly...
'DING' as it hits the steel.

Great fun!!!

It does take a whole bunch of elevation clicks to shoot that far out though...

The gun is a CZ Silhouette - shoots an honest 1 MOA with Federal target and Winchester PowerPoint's. Shoots about 1.5MOA or so with just about anything else that's not total junk-ammo.

Here's my first group after sighting in my Savage BV yesterday. I was shooting from a sandbag, no rear rest, cheap ammo. I'm sure the gun will actually do better than this, so you might want to consider it. The Accu-Trigger is very nice and it also comes with Weaver-type bases already mounted. Pretty good gun for $280 I'd say.
