I've been searching high and low for a reasonably priced tool for many months now. I just ordered one (new manufacture) from Chris at Specter Arms for $25, delivery included. Thought I'd post here to help any other gun nuts who are in need. http://www.specterarms.ca/index_files/Page730.htm

Wow, good timing, I just ordered my fist SVT-40 earlier today and couldn't find one of these tools either. Is it common to have to adjust the gas system on these?

You rifle also may come on a higher gas setting, mine came set on 1.5..... use the wrench to change it easier without having to take the top guard off, take the gas cup out to spin it around.......the sight tool is a handy lil thing to have as well, soooooo in summation, its good to get your hands on the tools regardless....good to have and good to know. I scooped a set when Corwin had them....so they are original from polish military storage....but as long as it works :) enjoy that rifle mang !!!

It was intended that the setting be changed as needed according to temperature, fouling, ammunition variance, etc, etc. Definitely not supposed to be able to use one setting forever. Apparently reluctance of troops to properly adjust them was a big problem resulting from limited training/ experience with the rifle. Once you've done it a few times you can adjust the setting in less than a minute. Start low and adjust up until reliably running at the existing conditions.

I'd sure like a tutorial on SVT 40 gas setting recommendations for certain conditions ie ammo, weather, fouling etc....

I have not jumped to the tool yet, currently I have a mini adjustable wrench from dollarama that looks like a joke tool but buts awesome. I had a few jams with MFS FMJ yesterday where the next live round would somehow get caught up in the bolt carrier trapped sideways where I had to pull back the bolt and reinsert the round then fire away. Happened 3x out of about 50 rds. I'd have died 3x on the eastern front..... or more

You want it to run on the lowest setting possible. Mime runs flawlessly on 1.2 :) with Norinco ammo

Will having the gas system set too high cause any damage to an svt? I set mine to 1.5 right when I bought and it will eat everything reliably, now I'm wonndering if I should try turning it down.

You should start at the lowest setting and turn it up until it cycles reliably. The recoil is harder on the gun as the setting goes up. I made my adjustment tool on the "laser" we have at work.
