Hey,

So i want to try a red dot for my 12 gauge shotty and would like to spend less than $100. Ive been looking around and there's lots of cheap ones around and chinese copies. Are any of them a diamond in the rough?

Also, since its for a shot gun, are there any particular type your suppose to use? i heard you should only the tube kind will endure the recoil, but dont they have worse FOV?

thanks guys, i really need help finding the best least expensive RDS

Best cheap red dot advice I ever got was simple.
"Don't buy cheap red dots".

Most cheap copies use cheap glass and have personally witnessed multiple cheap red dots either fail, fall apart, or glass explode after only a handful of rounds.

I'd say pony up and extra 100 bucks and find a used vortex or Burris on the EE. Atleast they'll have somewhat resale value.

As for types of red dots, any decent quality red dot will handle 12g. No difference in "strength" between the tube style and the (I don't know what to call them) mini red dots? Like the trijicon RMR.

Do NOT buy cheap! You might as well take your $100 and burn it. Don't get NCStar or Sun Optic. I'm speaking from personal experience. Learn from others!!
The other problem with cheap red dots is the red dot disappears in bright sunlight. This can happen with some Eotechs also but it will definitely happen with cheap glass!
Holosun is a good one.

Buy once cry once
a good one can be sold and you will get some flow back where as a cheap one is just money down the drain

Under 250-300 always buy a Bushnell TRS-25, Holosun is supposedly also good at the top end of the 300$ price range but the TRS is half the price and reliable.

Why spend 300 on a Holosun when a used aimpoint is only 100 bucks away, and will probably out live you?

Don't know if you thinking of reflex style optics as well but thought I would share my experiences with such. Have owned a cheap made in China reflex sight, not sure what brand but it's the commonly found one that goes by dozens of brand names, (from Browning to NC Star). It would have been okay on an airsoft gun (like intended) but even on a 22lr it was inconsistent.

Then I spent a bit more money on an offering from a real optics company but I would recommend against a Bushnell Firststrike for use on a shotgun. It did well mounted on a 10/22, then performed great on a .223 (Tavor) but when mounted on my short barreled 870 it would not keep zero. The windage would move after each shot.

It sits happily back on my 10/22 but I need to try another type for my shotgun. Am thinking that the Burris Fastfire is the cheapest option for shotgun use.

You wouldn't buy either, the price range was aprx 100$ and there is no other red dot worth getting than a TRS-25 at that price

In my experience the TRS25 is a crap shoot as both of mine sh*t the bed being used on rimfire guns. If you want quality it's going to cost you, just that simple. I personally see no benefit to a reddot on a shotgun, a hi viz bead works just fine for the effective range of a shotgun.

Thanks guys. Ill check out the trs25 and the burris and vortexs and see if any tickle my fancy

The reason I want to try a red dot was for the ease of not having to line up the front a back sight. Rds are suppose to be parallax free so u just get the dot on target and shoot. Instead of me having to line up the ghost ring and bead. Am I wrong??

That is the premise behind them. No optic is parallax free, it's simply not possible. RDS are almost parallax free, to the point where it really makes no difference. The RDS comes into its own at shorter distances where speed is paramount. Too many people buy a reddot and then b*tch that it won't shoot super tight groups at extended ranges, or that the dot covers a lot of the target at 300 yards. An RDS is not designed nor intended for precision shooting or distance shooting. Some tips about using your RDS.

1. You must keep both eyes open to get the full benefit of an RDS.
2. Don't look at the dot, look at the target. People who complain the dot is fuzzy are usually looking at the dot instead of their target, with the exception of those with astigmatism.
3. Keep the brightness of your dot turned down to the lowest level you can still use effectively. If you run it too bright you will get "blooming" of the dot, where the dot appears much larger than it really is and appears to have "rays" coming off it like the sun.
4. Be realistic with your expectations of accuracy. Your RDS is designed for rapid effective hits on target at short to medium distances.
