Need cleaning rod advice

Hi all,

Been a rifle shooter for some time but am relatively new to handguns. I have always used Dewey coated rods to clean the bore of my rifles. But now for my handguns, I bought a Pro-shot kit. The cleaning rod is metal ( I think it is stainless steel). I am afraid the rod will damage the barells of my newly acquired revolvers ( .357 mag and .22lr), especially that with revolvers, you have to clean from the muzzle. Do I worry too much? Should I buy coated handgun rods?

Thanks

Gilbert

I use an aluminum rod that came with my Outers kit, it works well for me, but I try to be careful about letting it rub on the muzzle as best I can.

I use a brass rod and I am very careful. You can always put the rod through and thread the brush from the forcing cone end.

Also, good choice on getting revolvers. What kind are they?

I got the Gunslick carbon fiber pistol cleaning rod. It has worked great in all my pistols:

I use it with a muzzle guide for extra protection, even though most pistols don't have a target crown. :)

I also recommend the pull through kits, whether Otis or another brand. Just be careful that you're not dragging the cable to one side when pulling through. I use a really thin "weed whacker" nylon line pull through kit, and it's thin enough to feed through a muzzle guide to avoid dragging to the side while pulling through. You can look up how to DIY one of these, or buy a premade kit from http://www.patchworm.com. Really nice guy to deal with and sells some very useful accessories with the kits. This is now my go-to quick cleaning solution, at the range or just when you don't have time for a full strip and clean session.

Hope this helps!

I've started using a muzzle guard with ALL cleaning rods if I have to put them I thru the muzzle. I feel it's the only way to avoid rubbing the crown and possibly causing damage.

Thanks all for your answers and for the ones who asked, my new revolvers are Smiths 686 and 617.

Thanks

No cleaning rod is as hard as the metal of any barrel. If your SS rod doesn't bother your rifles, why would you think it'll damage handgun?

I use brass pistol rods from outers for lead removal once accuracy degrades. As far as cleaning between range sessions I typically use a pull through for cleaning before temp storage.
