Hey all. Just got a used T/C .44 Rem Mag barrel for Contender. The end of the barrel has internal treads and the rifleing is cut back maybe an inch. I know .45 Colt could fire .410 so maybe a choke? Can't see this on .44Mag. Also there are two metal circles cut into this bbl. one half way down the bbl. the other where the front sight would be. These are filled with metal. Very fine workmanship on this. Wonder what this could be? The bbl. has a rear mount scope base, no sights. It is a Thompson Center barrel. I'll try a photo.

Edit: obvious would be a muzzle brake but very little material maybe 1/10 inch thickness there. I have a muzzle brake treaded outside on a rifle.

Little more info. The end if the bbl. is reemed out 1 9/16 inch deep and id 0.514 inch, same od as rim of .44mag brass. The second hole (mark) is past the end of the reem job. This is a Thompson Center bbl but current list is 12 or 14", this is 10".

I guess I could cut down the bbl. to 8 1/2 inch. Kind of crazy. I think I'll look in Brownells see if there is a muzzle brake like this?
 
So I got looking at this setup. Scope base hits on gun receiver, will not close. Would need to machine material off scope base to make it work. Looking like this is going back were it came from. Too fuzked up for words.
 
Just to finish this off.

The scope mount is on backwards. There is a machined notch on the scope base and this should be pointed back not front. This isn't a show stopper but the treads inside the bbl. I do not like and the bbl. reemed out oversize not good for me. Turns out this is some kind of estate deal, selling for deceased family member I guess.

I am sending this back to the seller. I don't want to shorten the bbl. I don't want to fire it with exposed treads. I am afraid I might strip or twist off the screws holding the scope on, wrong Locktite. So easist for me to send it back.

Now I am on the hunt for .44 Rem Mag bbl. for Encore or Contender.
 
What you have is a 44 Rem mag made for firing 44 Rem mag shot shells. The choke is missing. There are threads inside the choke. They serve two purposes, to stop the shot capsule from spinning and to break open the capsule. The threads are straight. You likely have an old barrel from when they first started making the contenders. The first ones had flat bottom lugs with a screw with an Alan key head which holds the extractor in place. Flip your barrels upside down and compare them. Also the older ones had less of a slope at the back of the lug. They are made to fire 44 rounds with choke removed. Some of the earliest barrels will not fit the latest pistols. I have an early model on its way to me. I have three barrels for it in my possession. The barrel on the gun is a 44mag and 44 shot. It has its choke.
 
Now I see this in my book Cartridges of the World. Called 11.15x52mm or 55 gauge. Apparently this round can still be purchased. Missing the choke is not good.

I flipped the scope mount around and no issues installing the bbl. in my Contender. Mine is pretty old, it came to me with a .22lr bbl. I decided to keep the bbl. If I find a choke I'll buy it.

More useless information. I ordered a choke off E-bay. WTF, it is only money! $35 US$, no key, will just make one. I will never use the choke, just want to complete the package.
