This breed lets you do it all!!! I have personally been present when a DD watched a duck go down on the other side of the St. John river... Two other dogs FAILED to recover the duck... Finally, we let the DD go in to make the retreive, 30 mins later (approx), that dog recovered the wounded duck... Says alot when a dog won't give up!!!

I have hunted with Chocolate Labs for near 20 years. Easy to train and great pets. The colour is not important to hunting quality just to your personal colour preference. That would be my choice.

Look at the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever - way smarter than a Lab and a true Canadian dog to boot. ;)
Not only will it retrieve your ducks, it will lure ( "toll" ) them in too. :)
Oh, my comments re the Lab are meant in jest, sorta. Daughter just got a cute chocolate lab pup and when asked why she didn't get a Toller she replied " 'Cause I din't want a dog that can think" :D
 
Labs.....one of the easiest dogs to train, and I think they are the most versatile hunting dogs around. I hunt mine in the water, on fields, and for upland. They are great family dogs and as long as you've got the room and the time to commit for excersize, they are great dogs....

So, where can I find one? That short, rough coat sounds much lower maintenance that a Golden's long silky locks, less shedding too?

..... How bout a 26" Remington 870 Special Purpose. 3" chamber, screw in chokes as well as a 20" shorty bbl and a 23" fully rifled cantilever deer bbl. Tupperware stock has been replaced with a walnut police jobby. :)

A hunting friend of mine has had Tollers in the past. They were smart and excellent dogs, but I found them a bit hyper, which is the reason I chose a Lab over the Toller.

Well, ya, she is but the only reasons I don't hunt with her is that:
1. She's afraid of gun fire :confused:
2. She'd eat the damn duck rather than retrieve it. :mad:

But I agree, the best all 'round huntin' dog has gotta be the Lab.

It's hard to go wrong with a Lab or Golden Retreiver. There is a reason they are popular dogs, they are very easy going, intelligent and live to please their family.
Both breeds are tough dogs that take training very well and can work for a novice dog trainer.

If you are a first time dog owner, either one would be a good choice, the only disadvantage the Golden has is that it sheds more.
