Getting ready for duck season, going through the safe, I pulled out an old double 12 that's been waiting patiently for this. My dad has mentioned that it would make a good base for an express gun. Does anyone know of gunsmiths that do this kind of work? is it worth it? how much would that cost?
the gun is nothing special, its a Ruko Canada (I believe someone has mentioned its a Sears make) but its a solid platform, and it does have sentimental value.

What in your mind is an express gun?

Converting it to an express gun will cost thousands and will bear no resemblance to what it is now

If it has sentimental value perhaps get the chokes measured and see if it can shoot steel shot and go use it...

not converting, manufacturing a set of double barrels to swap the 12ga when doing a moose camp and such, Im looking for someone who can manufacture a double barrel in 30-06, maybe 45-70, but if its few $K may as well look for a baikal

It would be numerous thousands. Get the Baikal.
There is a member here who has made double express rifles out of double shotguns. Beautiful work.
if you wanted an extra set of rifle barrels, it would be best to get another set of shotgun barrels, and convert them, rather than having a set made from scratch.
I do not think that a Ruko double would have the inherent quality to use as the basis for such a project.

One option might be to make an insert barrel in something like .38-55 or .45-70. This has been done. Results in sort of a cape gun, one rifled barrel, one shotgun barrel.
The firing pin has to be suitable for rifle use.
The insert could be stabilized with a pair of o-rings, one at the breech, the other at the muzzle. Hardest part would be dealing with an extractor - unless you were content with a notch to manually hook out fired cases. And you wold need sights.

The action design required for a double rifle in 30-06 is quite specific and the shotgun, if domestic make, likely isn't up for it. An alternative may be a double set for slugs. Either way it's one of the most expensive shooting projects there is.
