Need guidance from experienced hunter

I'd like to thank the OP for starting this thread. For folks in a similar situation, such as myself, where the minute and some rather grandiose details between these calibers are completely unknown to us. There has been a ton of useful and insightful information shared here which will help us (newbies) in choosing the right tools for the job. I guess that's why we joined CGN to begin with. Sorry for the interruption...carry on...

Are you planning to eat your harvested game on a BBQ or in a meat slushy?
Lol! :D

I've hunted a fair bit with the .300, and the steaks were the same on the bbq as ones killed by my .308.

This thread started as one rifle for NA, and that includes BIG animals in my books. If the op stays in quebec to hunt, then the .308 is a great choice, but quebec isn't all North America is it...

The switch had nothing to do with the .308 being more powerful or having less drop. Actually, it's not quite as powerful and has MORE drop when using heavier bullets.
The switch had more to do with carrying more rounds of ammo for the same amount of weight on the soldier, and some political reasons, and some other reasons I won't pretend to understand.
The 30-06 and the .308 both shoot 30 caliber bullets. The .308 has a smaller case, and therefore holds less powder. BUt it is rated to a higher pressure, so faster burning powders can be used. When shooting 150 gr bullets, the two are identical. The both shoot the 150 gr 30 caliber bullets at the same velocity, so they will have the same ballistic drop. But when you get up to 180 gr bullets, the longer bullets take more powder space, and therefore a higher percentage of the powder space is stolen from the .308 case than the .30-06 case. So the 180 gr 30 caliber bullet can be sent out of the barrel at 2700 to 2800 fps from the 30-06, but can only be sent at 2500 to 2600 fps from the .308. This will cause more drop.

So don't buy a .308 over a 30-06 thinking that you're getting a more powerful cartridge that won't drop as much. That's not how it is. The biggest reason to buy a .308 over a 30-06 is... is... wait. There isn't one.

J/K. It's if you really want a short action to lose that 3 ounces off your rifle. And there is something to be said for that.

308 is a little cheaper. 308 has less recoil. 308 can also fire 7.62x51 which is available in large quantities, something which isnt nearly as easy to find in 3006

Seriously? For NA game? Do you live on Kodiak Island? If not, a .375 is overkill for 99+% of NA hunting situations.
A 375 is not overkill for BG, but I would not recommend it for a first rifle either.

To the OP .... Read Boomer's excellent posts again.

I just dont think i'll go hunt elephants in Africa but i guesstimate in my life time i'll go on many hunting trip all over N-A since its easily doable for me.

Also.. from what i took here.. im still going to shop for a 30-06 unless someone find me a reason not to. I live in Quebec (well Montreal now) so its the place i should hunt to most.. then why not a 30-06 ?

@ The OP...

Also take a good look at the prices and availability of various ammo choices in your area.

its the weekend, so i need to go to my gunstore and burn cash.. i have no choice :) so i'll start checking for price of ammo and what rifle brand they hold in 30-06. i'll wait to buy the actual rifle so that i am sure i wont change my mind on caliber again :) [most likely, i'll go hunt next year.. not right now]

What would be the 30-06 cadillac rifle ?

Tried every calibers, bought many rifles, but at the end, i always did come back to my 308 ( i own 15 308, i think i like them ), if you except the big bears ( dangerous ) a 165 gr Accubond @ 2800+ is more than enough for the rest in NA... My 0.02... JP. PS: Shooting perfectly with a 308 will always beat shooting average with a 338 mag....

From my needs and the clear anwsers regarding caliber.. here is where we are:

270 (3 votes)
Kelly Timoffee, Biggunners, Maxkeg

30-06 (9 votes)
VLT79, Bowie, sobo4303, Eagleye, memaquay, Boomer, Bookworm, chappy, Cleftwynd

308 (6 votes)
dand883, kamlooky, tbrwlf, blasted_saber, blargon, caramel

I think 270 is the best choice, 300 Win-Mag is effective beyond 200m-300m. Closer than that it just goes through with not much shock power. If you wish to consume your game, stay away from 300 Win-Mag, because a quarter of the meat will be destroyed and becomes Coyote food.

this has nothing to do with the chambering but rather bullet placement combidened with improper bullet selection

never buy new unless you have too . its the same as buying a new car. losses about 15% as soon as it leaves the store. buy it off here. the worst you lose is shipping unless you don't research how much there going for...

I think different, never buy used when for about the same money or just a little more you will get brand new easily exchangeable rifle, but that is just me... JP.

The "cadillac" rifle is the one that you like the most. If you are talking about high-dollar, Heym, Sauer, and new Mausers come to mind. That's $4K plus territory. If you want something off the hook, head over to Martini and Hagn. Brand new and reasonably priced, I'd be looking at CZ and Winchester M70. 2nd hand, probably requiring a bit of TLC, commercial M98 from Tradex (no walk-ins, though).

BUY THE RIFLE THAT FITS YOU!!!! New , used, cheap, expensive, ugly or pretty it don't matter.

You may find a used $300 rifle that will complement you and your body size, however this may go the other way on the price spectrum.

Decide on the MAX you are going to spend but don't forget to look at all rifles from that price and below.Of course they will sell you the most expensive but it may not be the one that fits you.

Don't buy a rifle you cannot hold, especially if you never held that model before.

Hold on there... Enjoy your search for your new toy!

Find one that feels good when you throw it up to shoot, is visually pleasing to your eyes and is well made. Everyone's perception of 'Cadillac' is different, but in my case the best quality rifle is the Cooper, and I'm pretty sure they wont have a selection of them at your local gun shop. Sakos are good but the older ones are better. Saying that, did you have a look at the mint Foresters in the equipment exchange? There's a couple of really nice ones in there calibered in 30-06.
Generally I would recommend buying a quality new rifle over used, with my second choice being quality used. New will lose a bit when you sell it, but you also have a confirmed history with it. Who knows what kind of abuse the previous owner(s) has thrown at it.

Take your time, know your budget and have fun. If you're in a pinch I'm sure you have a friend that will lend you a rifle at short notice for a hunt if you promise to take care of it...
