Need Help Buying Crossbow

OK i figger from all i read here and the net that Excalibers the best. :)
I had a Barnet Rino compound one before so im familure with crossbows.
But which one the exomag or exocet is the exomag really worth the extra $100 :confused:

I will be takeing Island deer that are kinda small but have an open offer to go into Northern B.C hunting sometime so i want one for big deer and moose maby.
Any gunnutz use an Exocet??
Also ive been told not to waste my money on a scope as the sights that come with the excaliber are quite good.
I held one for the first time recently and was surprised how light weight they are they really are a slick lookin rig.
Lebarons had the Exomags for $654 and the Exocets were less cant remember how much less.
Is this a good deal ?
 
Excaliber is the best choice for sure, you have the hard part done.


As to which one, I would think that depends on you. How tall are you, how much do you weigh? That kind of stuff. The exomag is bigger than the exocet so you need to be able to comfortably hold it at ready for an undeterminable amount of time. Exocet will do the trick on deer noooooo problem, bear no problem and I can't comment on moose as I haven't shot on with mine, but I would expect with a heavier bolt/broadhead combo you would be good there too.

Get the scope and have fun with the best built, most reliable xbow out there.
 
I have shot the Exomag (now Exomax I believe) and it is nice. My buddy bought it with just about every option available (even the Crankaroo Cocking Aid!). The trigger is real nice too.

The scope, IN MY OPINION is definitely worth it. The graduated markings were bang on. This scope was designed for this crossbow and it shows. We took it through the archery course at our club and I was impressed.

If you fail to guage the distance accurately and your holdover with a regular duplex scope is off, you will lose a lot of arrows. You really need to practice this with a scoped crossbow because the brain gets tricked that you are shooting a gun and it says how can there be a trajectory issue at 40 yards?

I like scopes alot but never gave one on a crossbow much thought.
I looked thru the Excaliber scope when i was holding the Exomax and was very impressed with it.
I also just checked and Exocet has a new stronger 200 lb limbs so im gona get the new exocet 200
The bow shop has them for $559 :) seems like a good price. Thats a bare bow tho no extras.
 
Get the extras. Dissipator bars/pads, scope, quiver mount, quiver. They are all there for a resaon, to make life better for you.
Like not having your quiver mounted to your bow and having to walk back to the car to get it.

Excellent choice witht he 200, you will not be dissapointed.
 
i have an exomax and i love it. i barely even shoot it because its so boring to shoot because it basically hits the exact spot that you are aiming at;) when you buy one, just be sure to not aim at the same spot as your first shot or you will damage alot of bolts.

sure its draw weight is high (225lbs) but at 350fps and with so much energy i can basically shoot any animal in the world with this crossbow providing i use the proper bolt/broadhead combo.

i bought some judo points and scorpios for small game. even with a judo point and scorpio on the bolt, the bolt still went right through a squirells head at 35 yards and stuck about 1 1/2" into a healthy tree:eek: think ill buy some rubber blunts...might knock the squirell to the next concession:D :p
 
I've got a Phoenix. Love it! The major advantage with Excalibur is that it is a recurve crossbow. No wheels/pulleys to break on you. And if you do happen to break something, Excalibur will replace it, no questions. I broke my liimbs and had new ones with a week and a half.

I highly recommend a scope package, although I don't like the quiver. I use a leather one attached to my belt.

As far as which one to get, try them all. I went with the Phoenix because it fit me better and will still kill anything I need it too. Good luck and let us know what you get.

I would go with a scope as well, and I agree with Anglinfool on leaving the quiver off the bow. I have an old Barnett Demon (compound) that I put a bow mount quiver on, and found it to be a major PITA. Fortunately its a quick detach. By the way, I have never had any issues with the cams or cables on mine, and most vertical compound shooters will tell you the same. I'm sure the Excal's are great bows, but the "recurve is simpler and therefore better" thing is a bit ridiculous.
 
I have owned an Exocet, and now own an Exomag and older Wolverine. The Exomag is no longer made, and has been replaced with the new Exocet 200. The current line up is made of the Phoenix, Exocet 200, and Exomax. The scopes make accuracy that much better because they have trajectory marks for different ranges. As for mounted quivers, I didn't like the factory set up, but got one from the U.S. rep (Dan Miller), that mounts across the top of the bow, parallel to the limbs, and it is great. I dont like Bow mounted Quivers either and will make or get a belt mounted one.
Im gona buy the exocet 200 with the dissapater bars and get a excaliber scope package later.
Anyone use the Excaliber Bolt Pullers?? They look like a good idea and screw into the back of the bolts,
I used to have a hard time pulling out the 20 inch bolts from 14inch thick foam targets with my barnet rino as it burried them right to the fletchs at 30 yds.
 
I welded a field tip onto the end of a scew driver for a arrow puller. If you buy a compound type Xbow you cannot replace a broken string in the field without a jig. The excomax and exocet 200 are the same bow except for the riser and the excomax only requires more pull. Both bows will do the job, one will go a little deeper into the ground after it goes through the deer.
 
Great ideas on the bolt pullers :)

I got a striped Hex key that has the T nylon handle i can weld a feild tip to that.
 
No more Exo Mag it has been increased to the Exo Max which is I think 350FPS I would go with the Exo Set for anything in North America If you are planning to go abroad maybe consider the Exo Max. The Exo set will do everything you want it to with out killing yourself cocking it.

I have the EXO MAX and it is tough to ####.
It is also quite large and heavy.
But it will go through a moose and keep going.
So, If you just need deer in the 150lbs range, the Vixen will do nicely.
But if you need to compensate for something (like I do) then ge the EXOMAX.
I got the pin site, no scope for me, and it is dead on out to 40m.
 
any crossbow you choose will be enough to kill a moose, deer, bear...etc
hell last fall I killed a 300lb bear, penetrated to the flecthing, would have been a pass through except I nailed his far scap, and I also penetrated up to my fletching on a bull moose.........

all with a 50 lb compound going MAYBE 220 FPS with the wind behind it.....
anybody that argues a vixen won't kill a moose deader than an exomag/max is splitting hairs

have fun and buy whatever bow you can afford, because any of them can kill any north american mammal.....no questions asked....just get a good broad head( preferably not a mechanicle for moose/bear) and hit the woods!!!!!!

A bit off topic, but go to the Excalibur home page and watch the video of Bill Troubridge taking an elephant with his Exomax using a 900 grain arrow moving 250 fps. He felt he would have gotten a complete pass through if it hadn't hit the leg bone on the opposite side.

That being said, it seems apparent that even a Vixen with the right arrow/broadhead combo would do the job on any animal in N. A.
