I am looking for a new big game rifle and am now looking at the 300wsm or the 270wsm. I cant decide which one to choose, I have read good things about both calibers. Could you guys please help me out with my decision.

Thanks Mark

You won't benefit from a magnum with its extra velocity until you start shooting past 300 yds. So if expected distances are shorter you will do just as well, and in some respects better, with a 30/06 or 270Win.

Is this your first BG rifle?

If you are interested in those calibers, I suppose you are most likely interested in a bolt gun? If this is a first gun (forgive me for assuming), there are a bunch of reasons not to go magnum: top are cost and avoiding a flinch learning to shoot. Unless you are a well practiced long-range guy switching over to hunting, something in the .308 class is almost certainly a better choice.

Im looking at the Browning X-bolt and manly hunt whitetails, moose, bear, elk, and trips for muleys and other big game.

Hard to beat 30-06 lots of options in bullets and always available even in little gas stations in the middle of nowhere.
They are like the little 22 everyone has one.
My personal favorite 6.5x55 gentle to shoot and I would not hesitate using a Swedish Mauser on any big game North America.
Tradeex has some excellent choices and they will not cost a fortune.

Go with the 300wsm more bullet choice, and I have not seen any that did not shoot extreemly well. Iam not refering to Browning A bolt just the 300wsm cartridge

260,270,7 08.308,30 06 all kill just as well out to about 300 yards If you are planning on shooting farther that that then 7m Rem Mag, or a 300win mag. I use and perfer the 7m Rem Mag but that is just me, everone has their own preferance.

look at the price of ammo, and availabilty. i wa in fort nelson the other day there were 2 different loads of 300wsm, 8 boxes total at 60$/box. the 30/06 had 8 loads and about 40 boxes total averaging 24$/box. which are you going to practice more with

If you start with anything in the mythical mystical MAGNUM category, all you will get is a flinch. Although its nice to have a calibre that will all but vaporize that largest moose, you will probably hunt more deer that anything. Non "Magnum" offerings will readily fill the tag, and they are much cheaper to feed (and become proficient with).

I had a 300 WSM, sold it and bought a 300 win mag.

Most 300 wsm's are very light and kick like hell. If you shoot alot and are good at it it's a good cartridge, not so much for a weekend warrior.

Assuming you're already experienced hunting and shooting and are just looking for a new rifle cartridge combo, if you reload I'd say flip a coin. If not .300.
If this is gunna be your first rifle take a good hard look and a more mild mannered standard cartridge ie .270, .308 or similar.

I have two friends who have tikka's in .270wsm, they both love that gun. One of my friends told me he thought that gun kicked less then a 30-06. I would buy one if that is true.
