Need help choosing a pistol

great choice. another member on this forum just bought the exact same thing. I got the same as my very first pistol as well. Just a suggestion, in case you don't like the caliber or want to try 9mm with very little add-on cost, storm lake conversion barrel is only $200 plus tax and shipping.
Can you also get a .40'barrel for 9 mm?

I just went over to the USA today to try out a couple of 9mm handguns.

I like the Glock 17 Gen 4 for the light weight of the gun, it felt light compared to everything else until I pulled the trigger the recoil was double of the other guns. It was easy to aim and easy to shoot once I found out I had to pull back the slide. That was scary the first time I did that, and said to myslef "why isn't it firing? I pulled the trigger".

The Sig P226 9mm was my favorite it had a better grip (I believe it was an E2) and was a bit heavier but the recoil was nothing compared to the Glock. Also loading ammo into the Magazine was a lot easier, I didn't have to use all my strength to force the rounds into it, like the Glock. The only thing thing I didn't like was the de-cocker, it didn't feel comfortable.

But both are much better guns than the .38 Special S&W Model 10 6" revolver I used in Florida a year ago. That thing had a kick and was so heavy.

This was my second time firing handguns and my first time firing semi-autos. If you want something in the $700-1000 there are a few used Sig P226 at some stores, check the stores on the site, I know of one that has 3 Used P226s for $700-$800.

for m&p and glock, as far as I know, there is none because it's only 3rd party drop-in barrel. the 9mm frame and slide are no designed to handled 40S&W, it won't fit and cannot handle the pressure, thus not safe.
this is why for m&P and glock, if will shoot 40 at one point, it's better to plan ahead to get mp40/g22 so that later on you have the option to convert to 9mm or 357. to drop in .357 barrel, you don't even need to buy mags because the mag is the same for 40 and 357.

Sig is a totally different story. in the example for p226, not only the frame is the same for 22/9/40/357, but also Sig x-change kit swap out the whole top slide assembly, just like doing a field strip. it also comes with one mag that will get you started.
