Looking at taking the plunge at a target tack-driver in 22lr. Any suggestions on what I should be looking at? If a CZ came in stainless heavy barrel I would be all over it. I am trying to get enough practice to evolve into a effective long range shot with centerfires later. Where do I need to start?

I bought a mkII fv and it is guite accurate but if I had known boyds quit making stocks for them I would have bought the BTVS
the plastic stock isnt all that great IMO

I originally went looking for a Savage myself for the price and they list lefties too. Couldnt find any and all the dealers I asked (lots of online too) told me it would be months, maybe lots of months. So I bought a CZ452 American. Would have been nice to give Savage a run but the CZ was so easy to get and it sure is a lovely little rifle. Have 2 now and a CZ527 CF 223 as well and am very happy. Besides, you never hear anyone complain about the crappy workmanship of CZs? All the guys in the gun store I bought it from own CZs. Good enough for me.

if its just going to be training rifle than I'd say Savage mkII. I think someone has already mentioned this inexpensive tack driver. Below are couple targets shot at 100 yards - not the best ones but pictures worth 1000 words

For the money it is hard to beat a Savage, but the plastic stock is junk. I would recommend that you buy the best glass you can afford, preferably with AO. A good scope will last you a lifetime on many different rifles.

What is the accuracy on the sporter barrelled savages? I am looking for something without a terribly heavy barrel (max 3/4") but I still want some decent accuracy.
Thanks,
Grant

It all boils down to how accurate a rimfire you will be satisfied with. If .4" or slightly more at 50 is satisfactory, then the Savage, CZ, and a couple of others will fill the bill. If you want real accuracy, [.2" @ 50] then you will need to choose from a more limited group of rimfires, and be prepared to spend serious coin to acquire one. Occasionally, one will find a used rifle from the latter group at a decent price, but someone will soon snap it up if you don't act fast. Regards, Eagleye

I would be willing to spend up to $1000 or so with glass, prefer to stay with a 0.5moa or better rifle. Stainless bolt with a durable stock as this will be my truck gun as well.

Marlin put out a "squirel" rifle a few years ago. Synthetic stock and heavy barrel, bolt action. I love it, it's the gun I learned on as well. The only challange being it doesn't come with open sights. If that's an issue any smith could add them aftermarket.

Then you will be shooting a CZ, or a Savage with Accutrigger, or possibly a Marlin Target version. A Serious rimfire will cost more than $1000.00 without optics and mounts. But you will be pleased with one of the above. I think I would opt for the CZ 452/453 Series rifles, as they seldom disappoint, and most will shoot .5moa or a bit better. The only thing is, some versions will require a trigger kit to get the pull down to acceptable levels. [about $20.00] This will leave you sufficient $$ for decent optics, which is paramount to good groups. Regards, Eagleye.

Side note:

I just bought a Boyds Evolution Nutmeg stock. I paid $152.00 shipped. It fits both my Savage MKII FV and my Savage 93R17 GV. I think, the GV gets it. Usually there are a few for sale on eBay.

+1 for the CZ452/453. I own a CZ452 American, stuck a Tasco 6-24x on it, tweaked it with an Eric Brooks trigger kit, and I can put cloverleaf 5-shot groups at 50 yd with Lapua Super Club or Eley Target with regular consistency. Next stop, better optics. I'm thinking Bushnell 4200 6-24x or 6500 4.5-30x if the price is right.

If you are not in a hurry, stay on top of the Rimfire EE and look for a used Bruno, Anschutz or even a Sako Quad. You can also put up a WTB post there.

I'll also have to recommend the CZ 452/453 group of rifles. For the money, they are VERY hard to beat.

During one .22 competition in particular, I took my CZ 452 American (with Brooks trigger kit) and beat out all of the guys with their high end 10/22's and Anschutz bolts. One hole 5 shot groups are entirely do-able with the CZ's if you do your part.

I just recently mounted a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40 Rimfire Scope (with variable objective) and am having a blast with it. Great combo IMO.
