I've been thinking about it I would like it to be in 54r as I have a lot of that ammo, I really know it limits my options but I was thinking an SVT-40 or M38, on a more expensive note a m39 or pu sniper would be cool

So fugly!!!

I recommend purchasing an SVT-40.

I bought one last December and it is a "hoot to shoot". Cleaning is not as difficult as some people say it is. There are great videos on the subject that make the task "eazy peazy".

The nice thing about the SVT-40 is the lack of recoil due to the gas system.

Cheers !!

Well I wouldn't really consider the M39 a Red Rifle but that is a side note. The M38 can still be had a decent prices (100$ or more less then a M44 and the M38 is much more significant historically). A SVT-40 is also a very good buy, I paid 400$ for mine several years ago and I still think I paid a fair price despite the prices going down (not a single regret on that purchase). Now there is so much selection for the SVT-40s (early war, late war, different manufactures, different stock types etc.) and there are so many out there now you can get them get them for fairly cheap (250$-300$) which is realistically what you would pay for a M38.

I personally plan on staying away from the snipers myself (at least until I read up on them more) as I can't tell a original from a fake.

Go with the SVT40, just pick up a gas adjustment tool while you're at it (or a really small 3/64 box end wrench).

Mine is set on 1.5 as it wouldn't eject reliably on 1.1 or 1.3. It has a nice little kick because of it.

M38/M44: Very fun to shoot, especially when you fire a hot load and a giant fireball escapes the rifle. The recoil is fairly intense if you're bench rest shooting but standing it's quite manageable. Cleaning is easy and the rifle can be quite accurate.

SVT-40: Is a little finicky, make sure you've assembled it correctly and cleaned the rifle very thoroughly. When it's setup correctly it's a blast to shoot, one of my favourite semi-auto rifles.

I would probably choose the M38 or M44 if I had to but I recommend you buy them all while the price is still right.

I like the svt-40:
Big
Loud
Uses large round
Has a cool vented hand guard
Comes with a sweet looking muzzle brake
It has a magazine
It scares the hell out of people

M38:
Short handy little rifle
Easy to carry on a quad

M44:
The only bolt action I know of that has a folding bayonet
Short and handy
Easy to carry on a quad
Not as accurate as a m38.

I have all 3 rifles and they are all great but if you want the wow factor and your friends asking you what the heck is that. That's the one I would go with if I had to pick one. It doesn't really matter anyway you will eventually pick up a m38/44 anyway. Buy the svt-40. I went with the earlier model with the 6 port muzzle brake it also has the scope mount if you feel the need to get a scope.

Don't have an M38, but do have a 91/30, an SVT-40, and M44....

I love the SVT on a level that's hard to describe... The way that muzzle brake sends a concussive shockwave down the line at the firing benches and makes the tactical-ninjas flinch is a thing to behold...

The 91/30 is an elegant old lady from a different era... A throwback to the gilded age.

And the M44 is the one that's most likely do go in the trunk. Simple, handy, rugged, easy to maintain. I shoot it more than the other two by far now.

I have a Tula M44, a 91/30 Tula ex sniper, a Tula SVT40, and a Finn M91. The M91 is the most accurate and has a VERY light trigger pull, the M44 is a flamethrower, and the ex sniper shoots cloverleafs with the bayonet attached. Out of all of them, however, I think the SVT 40 has the most "cool" factor. Like larrysmith said; it scares the hell out of people. When I shoot it at the range, I've heard more than once: "WTF was that???"
