A friend of mine is entertaining the thought of purchasing a 22 mag semiautomatic rifle and wanted me to recommend one.
I have owned 22 mag rifles but not semiautomatics.

What do the members of CGN recommend he should be looking at?

There aren't very many options when it comes to semiauto 22 mag rifles, my understanding is that .22 mag is a tricky caliber in a semi-auto configuration, and not a lot of manufacturers bother to spend the time to solve the issues.

Having said that, I did some research at one time as I was interested in .22 mag myself. Two of the commonly recommended options are the CZ 512 and the Savage A22 both of which are offered in a .22 magnum version.

From what I gleaned:

CZ 512 PROS: easy takedown, better quality feel, cycled more varieties of ammo, has a simple single stack magazine available in 5 and 10 round (maybe other options?), accurate, and reliable, comes with iron sights CONS: trigger pull heavier than the Savage, more expensive than the Savage, might be a con for some, action can't be cycled with safety on

Savage A22 PROS: lighter, 10 round flush fit rotary style magazine (other mag options?), accurate, adjustable trigger, less expensive CONS: Trickier takedown, a little pickier with cycling some ammo, does not come with iron sights.

Keep in mind I don't own either one, this was just what I gathered from reviews, and doing my own research, there were probably other things that I just can't remember. I was leaning toward the CZ at the time, but everyone should do their own research, and handle both firearms first if possible.

EDIT: I went and checked, and it looks like some CZ 512's do not have the iron sights either, if that's important to you, then it is something to verify beforehand.

Cheers!

Not that this is important to most folks but to add to what Revv said Butler Creek makes 25rd mags for the A22 magnum.

I had a Harrington & Richardson (H&R) Model 700 22WMR semi-automatic. It was OK but I was not the best shot with it at 100 yards. I believe I paid in the 300s for it. I do better with my bolt action Marlin. YMMV.

I read all the reviews and decided on a cz 512 , it is all good reviews and I could find no one that had problems or anything but praise . So I bought one off here on EE and it did not cycle properly right away , I took it apart and cleaned. ( it was clean) . It cycled for 8 round then when I took it apart found one of the spring guide rods broke off the bridge and the spring had got smashed .

I have back ordered parts ordered ,
BUT ,
, I have found out it works on one spring and shoots as good as a quality bolt ( my cz 452wmr22)

Does yours actually work? The one I had was the biggest POS I've ever owned. Constant double feeds and numerous light strikes. Type of ammo or mag used was irrelevant. Did it with everything. A good cleaning and proper lubrication made no difference either.

Or maybe I got a dud?

Traded it at a gun store with full disclosure that it didn't work right. The guy working behind the counter wanted it himself because he thought it was kinda cool. Wonder if he ever got it running right.

I had a volquartsen in 22 wmr and their accuracy can be very good once you test the half dozen types of ammo to see what the gun likes. Mine would put 25 rounds into a one inch group at one hundred meters. It also liked the cci mag 1850 fps and the groups weren't that much bigger.

CZ 512 all day if it's a semi. Bolt guns I'd also say a CZ 457 or if you want a bit more of an old school feel in the same category a Cz 455

Mine works, though it is magazine dependent. I found that out of the 6 mags I have for it, one mag was just junk for whatever reason. Wouldn't feed properly though it had no damage from what I could see. Other than that mag, I've had the occasional Failure to feed but nothing worse than that.

Other than that, man, nothing like a little Bullpup .22 mag to give you delusions of having a P90. Honestly, it's lightweight, highly portable, easily pointable and a true beauty to shoot.
