Hello again,

I need to little help deciding on a new barrel for my Savage Model 111.The rifle is currently chambered in .243Win and I would like to re barrel it to 7mm-08. I am looking for a drop in barrel ( likely ordering from Mystic Precision) and am having a hard time deciding on exactly what I want. So far I am hung up on the following options:

1. Make of barrel. I could get either a Shilen or a McGowen. Shilen barrel seem to have the most reviews about them so I am kind of leaning that way. My two biggest concerns are barrel life, amount of fouling, and a decent finish. The biggest concern being barrel life. I tend to shoot a lot. This rifle is my primary 300yd target rifle.
2.Blued or Stainless? The rifle is a blued model. Would it be okay to put a stainless barrel on a blued receiver? I know it will look strange but that's what I am going for. Are there any other things to consider besides aesthetics?
3. Twist rate. The barrel comes in 1 to 8, 1 to 9, and 1 to 10.Most factory rifles seem to have a twist rate of 1 to 9.25 for 7mm-08. The rifle will most likely be firing 130-140gr projectiles (139gr Hornady will be my first choice assuming it works out well). I am leaning towards a 1 in 9 twist. Any body have any experience with this?

Also just to confirm I will need a small/standard shank size correct? Any other things I should be thinking about?

Thanks

I ordered a prefit benchmark barrel and had it in 12 weeks, chambered, threaded and crowned. Even came with a smooth barrel nut that I didn't use, and it shoots.......still in load development but it is under .25 moa at 100 yards, and it should be.....it's a 3 groove 6ppc

I just sent a shillen back for warranty, checked the tracking number and it has been sitting in their mail box since the 30th of October, emailed them today and got an apology, that didn't sit so well.....

So contact Gary at big horn sales and order a prefit standard shank savage barrel chambered in 7-08 with a 8 twist, that way you can stabilize a heavier bullet if you want, and you can't over stabilize a lighter bullet so you have more room to explore with the new caliber

....like this?

Shilen select match HV contour 1-8 twist 7-08 tube on a 11 receiver, RB trigger and B&C Medalist stock, 25MOA KF steel rail with an 8-32x56 LRMOA Siii to cap it off...

Shoots weeeee lil holes with 162gr Amax's over H4350 all day...

Gets kinda boring actually.

Okay I called Gary at Bighorn. He was extremely helpful as we had a lengthy discussion about what barrel would suit me best.I decided on (and ordered) a Benchmark stainless sporter weight barrel with a 1 in 10 twist. Pretty fancy barrel for a savage hunting rifle but I am what you might call a one rifle guy.

I give credit where its due. Thanks for the suggestion
