Looking at Sako S20 Precision
Tikka UPR or CTR
BERGARA B-14 HMR PRO

I currently own a Tikka T3 in 30.06 that i could either sell or keep for hunting. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

The CTR and HMR are both very common choices for getting into the long range game. The S20 is awesome and if we were allowed suppressors I'd run a 20" .30-06 with a Banish 30 for hunting but I've not seen any of the Precision model in action yet.

Parts commonality with your Tikka could be nice. Keep the '06 for making burger and add a CTR paper puncher to your safe and hit Altasworx for some goodies.

Sako makes a great rifle and Sako makes Tikka so between these choices you cannot got wrong.

I had a negative experience with a Bergara B14R reliability, so my confidence in that brand is much lower than I have for Sako and Tikka.

I would suggest that you consider weight adjustability and price and select what suits you best between Sako and Tikka.

You might be ok with Bergara, but I doubt you will be better off.

Mostly looking to hit long range targets, if i could use it for both long range and hunting it would be a bonus.

Thinking maybe going with 24” CTR, and buying a better stock for it now.

The HMR Pro has a nicer action than the Tikka, and the HMR stock is decent, but they're not cheap.
Not a big fan of the UPR stock. For a little more you could put a CTR or Varmint in a XRS or a Bravo.
My vote is 24" CTR out of those 3. Lots of aftermarket to upgrade it down the line (chassis, shouldered prefits etc).

The layout that excels in a LR focused rig is not something I would want to carry hunting. Start with a budget, accuracy expectations and then the stock/chassis you find comfy.

If you can, test drive a few rifles set up for the type of LR shooting you prefer. The latest greatest may not fit or suit you... and comfy fit makes for accurate fire.

Barrels make or break any rifle and factory barrels can be a crap shoot. Given how much you will be spending on factory ammo or reloads, having a quality barrel to shoot them through is money saved and targets hit.

The rifle doesn't need to cost alot (or as much as you want) and this rifle really isn't much more then some factory rifles with similar layout.... and will shoot circles around them.

I like small groups at LR and that starts with a barrel capable of getting the job done.

YMMV

Would like the rifle to cost around 3500 to start with. Something that can get me to the range to start practicing and could be upgraded down the road.

Thought the Tikka TAC T1 was the same barrel and bolt as the CTR, just a upgraded stock?

Since you like Tikka, consider swapping a prefit match heavy barrel into the 30-06 you now own, drop into a stock/chassis of your liking and enjoy. Then you can put on the 30-06 and hunting stock for the fall.

Simple, and will shoot great.

Jerry

PS.. if you dont want to touch the hunting rifle, then start with a T3 in 308/243 and build up from there.

Might stick with the hunting rifle and buy the CTR and build it up from there. Why 308/243 over 6.5? I've heard that a 308 is a better starting .cal because its generally harder to shoot all around (recoil/flat shooting).

Buy the caliber you want.
I will be hunting with my XRS in 6.5 CM this fall, again.
If I was plowing through heavy bush then I would take something else.
My rifle and myself are almost ready for an aftermarket barrel. I am glad I did not get one right away, learnt lots so far with the factory one, ( Savage Stealth ) and it shoots well.

If you are going to use a factory rifle as a donor, the most common cals for a short action are 243 and 308... If you can find a 6.5 CM, even better. The factory parts are removed as needed to complete whatever you want as an end spec.

Enjoy your build.

Picked up a CTR in 6.5 and 24 inch barrel.

Will start to slowly build the gun. Was thinking about a Vortex® Viper PST Gen II for the scope? And maybe buying a chassis for the gun right away. Any suggests on the scope and chassis would be apricated. Budget for the scope will be around 1500.
