Right now my Colt 6920 LE carbine is very plane. I am seriously contemplating dressing it up a bit, starting with purchasing the aimpoint replica from CGN'er jackyiscxd. I was thinking about mounting it on top of my carry handle so I could still use my open sights, does anybody have experiance with this type of setup, if so could you post a photo so I can see what it looks like? I assume you would have to use the "L" syle mount and not the cantilever right because then it'd be way too high, right? Who thinks this is a bad/stupid idea?

Is there a difference in the two aimpoint's he has listed at http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=51650&highlight=aimpoint+replica or is it just the difference in the type of mount (ARMS quick release vs. regular mount)?

Also, the green laser he's selling seem cool. Any recomendations on what kind of setup to mount this with? I like the look of a lot of your guy's foregrip with all the rails, but I find this very unneccessary for one little laser. jackyiscxd sells mount that looks like it clamps onto the barrel, I'm not crazy about it but it looks like it'll do the job. I like the look of these from Bushmaster's website as I may get a flashlight in the future (any ideas where to get something like this or have you any recomendations?):

What do you guys think? I know it's a lot of questions, feel free to tackle them one at a time. Thanks.

Drop the carrying handle and use the flat top, get an aimpoint mount with proper height and a good back up iron sight.

Forget about the laser. Get yourself a GG&G bottom rail, a quality vertical grip and a surefire light (the budget way to go is a G2 with aftermarket mount).

dear santa, i have the best quality AR in the world. How can i turn it into a POS gun using fake/cheap/airsoft component ?

I was just thinking how to phrase it so not to upset the new guy, your 6920 needs ammo and lots of it, and someone who can operate it competently and safely, whether you use airsoft parts or the real stuff, clamping crap to the FSB is dumb, just ask the Mil guys about the triad rail they are forced to use.

Well Sparrow you took the words right out of my mouth. Don't clamp anything on the front sight. Get a SIR, Surefire has a good system. Larue mount for the Aimpoint(replica).

Stay away from mounting crap to the front sight base. This adds weight where you don't want it. I have used the issue POS triad and can say that it is indeed ####e. Bandaid fix for a better solution.
Buy lots of rounds and shoot the crap out it. Use your carry handle with the irons and get good with it first. Find out what works and what doesn't first. Then feel free to accessorise as needed.
That being said, my AR changes configuration about once a month. Am I just board with it? No, I am a gear whore.....
YMMV,
Hoddie.

If there was only one mod I would do is I would put a vertical grip on it. It makes shooting that gun soo much better. It doesn't cost that much. I have a vertical grip on every AR from 8" to 20"

And yes the TRIAD sucks, It makes the rifle more front heavy then it allready is. Espically the C7A2 20" with CarStock.

I just started converting my LEO M15A2 16" into a tactical shorty (sorry Ardent;) ). The first thing I did was convert the standard A2 stock to a RRA 6 pos. M4 stock and get an A4 flattop upper. I'm currently getting a Daniel Defence handgaurd installed that I bought from Wolverine. If you're gonna start tricking out your AR, a tactical (picatinny) handguard or a RAS/RIS system should definately be the first step, IMO. From there you can mount vertical grips, tactical flashlights, IR illuminaters, launchers, and even lazers if you want. Other than that, a good sight such as a real aimpoint (ML2) or an Eotech holosight would be the first on my list. You can also get new furniture such as a Tango Down pistol grip, and other accessories such as bigger trigger guard for use with gloves (or fatasses), ambi safety (if your're a lefty like me), Phantom flash hider... the possibilities are almost endless. This is an expensive hobby you're about to pick up, so don't start by buying cheap crap that'll have to be replaced (like I have many times... damn NCStar). My next purchase is for a 500 dollar Surefire flashlight for ####s sake, because a 250 dollar one (flashlight!) is considered cheap crap thats gonna break in the AR business. Good luck, and happy spending.

^Actually Surefire's weapon lights are designed to take constant recoils from rifles/shotguns. Unless you get the LED models which I'm sure it's harder to break versus halogen counterpart.

It's fun to dress up an AR (yet to do so on mine) but you might want to think about the functionality of each accessory, weight balance, total cost, etc etc.

My plans are:
- Vltor stock
- RIS
- Surefire vertical grip + light
- Eotech 552

Thanks for your comments guys. I think it may have sounded like I just bought the Colt, but in fact I've actually had my AR15 for about a year now (to answer GUNN's question where I got it, as I think he was referring to the unavailabilty of these particular rifles in Canada), and just have an Elcan for optics. While it's a decient sight, I want to try something else, thats why I'm talking about the aimpoint replica.

I'm pretty sure that I'll be getting the aimpoint replica, as a lot of guys on this site seem to have good things to say about it, despite a few people saying it's a POS (maybe I'll figure out the hard way, maybe not). I'll also be getting a laser and a light. One of these days when/if the guys making the 40mm launcher have a finished product, I'll be getting one of those too (or if not maybe a 37mm someday).

I get the point about the rails attached to the barrel and/or the sights = bad idea. ok, ok, thanks :) Who sells the GG&G rail, and how much will one set me back?

FWIW, the best mount for the $ out there right now is the forged aluminum Pro-Mag copy of the GG&G. I'd had it next to the real GG&G and it's the same mount - probably made in the same foactory as the 1st gen GG&G. The new one uses a different battery cap and has more lightening mill cuts, otherwise identical.

The Aimpoint clone is NOT and airsoft item. It will work just fine for range work, but it's not a real Aimpoint and I wouldn;t use it in a life or death situation. Honestly though - show of hands - how many of you guys have EVER used your personal (ie, not work issue) AR's in a life and death struggle? I'm guessing about.... none. ;)

Other than that, I would not touch that colt unless you go to a full RAS forend and vert grip. If you do, KAC is a good choice, or if on a budget, the YHM setup looks just like it if you use KAC rail covers (flak jacket on).

Sorry, I have to disagree. While the Aimpoint copy may not be an Airsoft item, it is still a lump of crap.
fwiw, my advice, leave the Colt alone, or sell it to someone who will, and appreciate it for what it is.
You can use the proceeds to buy all the bling crap you could ever hope to need or want.
If you wisely decide to leave it alone and still want a quad rail for all of your high priced lego, you would be better off to start another upper for this purpose.

I heard somewhere else that the added front weight can cause premature bolt failure, or something to that effect. Not an expert, far from it, so take this lightly. Just something to think about.

But that's not the point, it's for SHTF and the zombies. I thought everyone knew this already???

If I want replica stuff I would clam it on my toy gun.
