Hi Guys and gals..i have a sharps 4570 I'm looking to load some for the range and for hunting deer and bear..I would like to have a load for the range from 25 yrs to 100 yrs and some for hunting maybe out to 150 yrs...Right now I'm loading weighed 40 gr of Triple Seven (56 gr in the black powder tube) with a cast 405 boolet but have to run the snake through the barrel every five shots..I see people loading with 2400 and unique..Is this for the range or hunting or both and what recipe works best...thanks mike

Unique makes good low velocity practice rounds. It can be used to get black powder velocities but I prefer higher for hunting loads.
If you are looking for hunting loads with jacketed bullets the two common powders are 3031 and 4198 (IMR or H is your choice).
If you are looking for cast bullet hunting loads you can use the same powders; I can get quite good velocity with plain base cast bullets using H4198 and no leading or accuracy issues.

go here http://www.gmdr.com/lever/lowveldata.htm scroll down on the left and select 45/70 405 gr. Check out all the powder choices.
My choice is 500gr bullet with 700X powder doing 1200 fps. it knocks 1/4 inch steel targets over at 200 yards. Till I sink the legs into the ground and place rocks around the legs. I'm set up and trying black powder now, whole different ball game. But a fun ball game. casting some .457 cal balls for giggles(chicken rounds).

One of the best smokeless powders for the .45-70, if you are interested in loads that are close to original velocities is SR-4759. You'll likely have good accuracy in the 25gr range with your 405gr bullets.

Tigrr...on the gragh you sent me what does SD and GS mean..Im having one of those days where my memory sucks...are these plinking loads or do they have enough sap to knock done a white tail????

Sweet spot with my carbine length barrel is 44 grains of Varget shooting real nice at 200 yards.

The book value for trapdoors is 40 to 50 grains max with 405 grain lead.

As always, start light and work your way up.

These values come from the Lee manual, which has separate sections for Trapdoor era, lever, and modern bolt action or Ruger single shot.

These are hard cast and tumble lubed hollow base 405 grain.
what was the mix for hunting

SD : velocity Standard Deviation in feet per second
GS : Group Size in inches.
Leaving the barrel at 1200 fps my 500 gr bullet is still doing 900+ fps at 500 yds with over 900 foot pounds of energy. This will be the first season to try the 500 gr bullet on a mulie. I'll get back to you on knock down stay down.
Just looked at ballistic graph and at 100 yards the 500gr bullet has 1368 foot pounds of energy. Target practice here I come.
