In my own mind
Hey guys/gals,

A real Newbie who needs help for my 1st gun. I'm going to do my Black badge and was wondering what calibre I start should off with! I was looking at the 9mm or 40. I heard you have the IPSC Production and Standard. I would like a reliable, bang for buck and a all around gun.

As for models, I was told in the 9 to pick up a Tupperware and he laughed. I didn't get the joke till someone explained it to me. I would really go for a 40. I was told to go with one made out of steel that is Double Stacked, Bull barrel and Ambi safety with atleast 5 to 10 mags and full rig. I looked at a few and after reading some Forums, I realized that the Tanfoglio or STI are the ones. I know they are priceyyyy but I'm not going to buy 3 or 4 to find out that I should of went with these from the beginning.

Could you guys help me out on this issue? Which gun (new/used), model with what type of rig and why? Price, I'm willing to go to about $2000+/-.

Thanks a lot:)

Go to a range and shoot shoot shoot.
I'm in much the same boat as you (just starting out with handguns). After a dozen or so trips to the range, I've figured out what I like and what I don't like with regards to style and caliber.

Go to the range. Try out a 1911, CZ75, Glock, etc (all the common recommendations). See what you like first. IMHO, $300 spent at the range firing different styles and calibers will be money well spent, and useful practice.

Well, I dont shoot IPSC yet, but I am going to...
The last time I was at our range there were lots of guys with GLOCKS and M&P's.

I was asking a guy about his M&P and he said that he loves it.

Its a great deal, and if you find out you dont like IPSC then you dont have much tied into a gun... you can find it around the $599 range and get $50 rebate plus 2 mags (I also saw a dealer giving a free holster).

All you need is another mag (or 2) a belt and your set.

You could get in for under $1000...

Now, I am sure the guys that acutally shoot might have some different/better ideas... but thats what would do.

And people that I have talked with are going to 9mm cause its cheaper... but there are still lots of .40's too...

My advice, for what it's worth....

Buy a Grand Power K100Mk6. It's $550, as cheap as you are going to find. It's also in 9mm, a very good caliber to learn with and take your Black Badge with. It's traditional DA/SA, and you can carry it cocked and locked. With it, you can compete in both production and standard class. The trigger is better by far than the Glock or M&P, and as good or better than the CZ SP01.

The Uncle Mikes holster and mag pouches plus a belt will set you back $150.

This may not be the last gun you will own, but it's a very good gun to start with.

Never heard about the Grand Power K100Mk6. I was told maybe a Springfield XD-9 or 40. Where would I get Uncle Mikes holster, mag pouches plus a belt? I live in Quebec so they hit you hard in this province

I my area IPSC fans tend to go for CZ SP-01 Shadow.

9mm
High Viz sights
+++++++great trigger
no decoker
great grip
Low price

CZ will be the next 9mm I buy, but that's just my two cents.

I went to the range a couple of times and tried out the XD-9(not bad), Sig(not for me), Glock 17(not bad), M&P(not yet) but I saw the price and not bad with extra 2 mags. Just the rebate takes forever seems like.

Thanks for the info. I'll try one out. I heard about the decocker and some don't like it. Never tried so don't know. I read that the CZ is the clone of the Tanfoglio or is it the other way around?

Used to shoot practical in the UK. 1911 was king.

Came to Canada, everyone said, "Get a STI Edge".

Bought a Springfield 1911. Really needed a double stack to speed reloads.

Bought a Para 14-45. Really needed a 40 to make calibre changes easier on the Dillon.

Bought a Bul M5. Grip too small, rear sight broke.

Bought an Edge in 40 S&W. For 'standard' at least it is a great design, great trigger, very accurate, easy to shoot.

I always say "Buy initially what you are going to end up with". I didn't follow my own advice for financial reasons, and paid the price.

It's within your budget.

Get one.

Try posting this in the Action Shooting Games where you would get a better answer (And is the right place for this question..)

Like ckc123 says, you're question would get more visibility by the IPSC gurus in the Action Shooting Games forum, than the pistol forum.

My .02c: Have a look through the EE, and have a look at Rangtime's thread.

He is selling two complete packages with pretty well everything you will need to shoot either production or standard. The belts, mag pouches and holsters are also what you will end up with in the long run.

I did my BB earlier this year and shot my qualifying match with a Sig226 in Production, with uncle mike's kydex holster and pouches (very low cost, and good kit). Now I'm after a good Standard gun in .40 cal., with CR-Speed belt, holster and pouches (top of the line and about 5 times the expense than uncle mikes).

I took my Black Badge last weekend and the biggest recommendation I can make is get a CR-Speed or some other brand name velcro system belt. It sure makes gearing up and gearing down a thousand times easier.

If you are planning on shooting production only, I would suggest any duty pistol that feels good to you in 9mm. It makes a difference when your gun goes bang and feeds/cycles everytime. I haven't looked into any standard/open shooting so I have no suggestions there.

From someone who is on his 3rd Edge, buy one. I started with a Glock then bought an Edge, thought something else was better, sold the Edge. Realized I was wrong bought another Edge. Decided I wanted to shoot PD, sold that Edge. Shot 3 matches in PD, decided Standard was more fun, so I just bought another Edge.

There really is no other one worth considering unless you were thinking SVI.

My very expensive learned 2 cents.

Why post this in another forum ?

4string just gave you the right answer.

(Not to mention the others recommending the CR Speed gear)

Sorry ckc123. I'm new to this so I thought this was the thread. I'll do that and see what I get as advise.
Thanks

Thanks Dajoker for you advise. I'll check out the CR-Speed.

No SVI, not yet anyhow. They are way up on the $$$$$ plus I'm new to this. The STI was one I was looking at. The Edge or even the Tactical 4.15'' or 5''. The Executive looks nice, I have to say.
Thanks for you advise

I ordered mine from Brownell's as I couldn't find the right holster locally.
