Need help for my 1st gun (IPSC)!!!

A friend at work has an Executive. (Otherwise known as 'Pimp my Edge')

Buy the Edge.

TJ
OK Talljoe, the Edge but what about the Tactical? Besides the Excutive is way out there for price about $1000 more compared to the Edge. I'll see if I can try one out before hand.
Thanks

I heard they are going out of style the Revolvers. Especially for IPSC everyone has the double stack 9, 40 or the UFO guns.

Just try and get calssified in revolver.. you can wait up to a few years to find a match with the needed level of competitors to get classified..

Quite a few folks are interested in IPSC. Some of those actually take the black badge course. Some of those who take the black badge course actually show up for other matches. Some of those folks that do show up to matches decide that this is the hobby for them and will spend all thier money on a decent gun and equipment rather than new golf clubs or a canoe. If you know now that you will be the guy being eaten by misquitoes hauling steel poppers around the range 4 years from now because you just love this sport then you should buy the very best now.

You can't be sure that IPSC is going to be your passion yet. My advice would be to get a basic set up a glock, which is cheap reliable and accurate. 9 MM ammo is the cheapest and would be the best choice for production, 40 is a little more expensive and lets you get into standard divison major power factor. Get a bladetech or uncle mikes holster and mag holsters and you are good to go. For about 1000$ with a case of ammo you can start to play the game. A higher end gun would cost between 2K and 3.5 K. You would then need to rush out and buy a decent belt and holster for about 500-600 then ammo. So for about 3000-4000+ you can start to play the game.

Most everyone who shoots standard and places well at the Nationals shoots an Edge (or other STI) in .40. If you think this is going to be your hobby, buy it now and get it over with. If not, you will screw around with other guns and as your skill level improves you will upgrade guns, costing you more in the long run. Spend that money on gun trading on ammo. I have never met anyone sorry they bought an Edge, great firearms, somewhat expensive but you have the option to sell if you get out of the sport and recoup most of your money.

Take a look at some of the action shooting threads about getting started in IPSC. Here are a few tips to get you thinking.

1. What division do you want to shoot in? Production or Standard

2. Based on the answer to #1, chose caliber.

3. If you go production, and if you don't reload, go 9mm. 40 for production is OK if you reload, otherwise you will be shooting much hotter ammo than you need. Also, shooting 600+ rounds of full power loads in 40 for your Black Badge is a lot of pounding you don't need to go through.

4. If you go Production class, you will need a double action gun. Tupperware guns qualify, likewise the CZ and similar. Single action guns like 1911's are in Standard class.

5. If you go standard class, go 40, to make major power factor. Still helps if you reload (or buy reloaded ammo) for reduced power ammo for your Black Badge.

6. Now you can start narrowing down what gun you might want.

Also, read carefully the advice from jasonburnsdundee he is right on the money. If you know IPSC is going to be it for you, go for it.

Thanks a lot for your help Jasonburnsdundee,
Most likely I'll be the guy with no golf clubs (later on I'll try them as targets, the golfballs I mean) and as for a canoe. Ya right, the longest time I sat in one was for about 30 seconds. I got sick and tired of getting wet.
I'll be the guy with bug juice for the misquitoes hauling steel poppers around the range 4 years from now because I can feel that I'll love this sport.

Thanks a lot Moike,
I'll try out an STI Edge and a Tanfoglio LC. Then I'll decide which one I'll pick up. What do you think of the STI Tactical 4.15'' or the 5''?

Thanks a lot for your explanation SandRoad,
I'll probably start off in Production 9mm but will be picking up a 40 with rig. I do know that I'll have to reload so I'll be looking for a good used Dillion 650. I read up on some Forums and spoke to some guys and they recommended me the Dillion 650 instead of the 550.

I own a Dillon 650. It was the best piece of sporting equipment I have ever purchased! It was a lot of money, but now I have it. The time it has saved me and the ammo it produces are great!

Pretty hard to butcher an innocent WW2 1911 so maybe you should settle for an edge
