i am going to buy one in 44 mag but i have a hard time choosing between
a used desert eagle or a sw model 29 classic or a new taurus raging bull.

thanks

Do a search here for "taurus servicing". If you're still keen despite the horror stories then have at 'er.

My own tastes lean me towards the Classic 29 or to find a nice condition original 29. The Desert Eagle is just too much of a mutant for me to take it seriously even though I've shot one a couple of times. It's fun as a novelty piece but long term it's not something I'd want to own.

The 29 is far more of a sensible gun.... at least as sensible as anything that shoots .44Mag CAN be sensible.... :D While I don't have a 29 I've got its .357 brother, the 28. They share the same N frame so they feel the same. And the N frame with the right grips feels darn nice. I've also shot a couple of 29's and again they feel great, just more kick.

If you come across a nice condition Ruger Blackhawk or Redhawk in .44Mag I wouldn't turn away before a closer look either. I handled one in a store that was on consignment. It was in rough shape cosmetically but it felt pretty nice in the hand.

And finally a last suggestion for the revolver option. The Desert Eagle will be a little sensitive about the loads in order to work the slide correctly. But a revolver can shoot any power level within reason between the limits of enough pressure to leave the barrel but not enough to blow up the cylinder. So custom loading loads that you enjoy becomes a viable option far more than with the DE.

Of your choices, personally I'd go for a S&W 29 or 629 [stainless].

If you handload the .44 Mag can be pretty versatile in a quality wheelgun.

desert eagle NO QUESTION ...Every kid on the block has a 29....a EAGLE turns heads its great gun fun to shoot I only wish i had one

Of those, I'd take the 29. Of any others, I'll stick with my 10.5" Ruger SBH. If you don't reload, don't even bother with 44mag, but if you do, it's probably the most versatile caliber there is. 180-350gr bullets, velocities whatever you want them to be (within reason). I can't think of any other caliber that can do all that.

When I first heard about the DE back in the early 90's, my gunsmithing buddy told me not to bother with them. Big, overpriced, heavy, crude....
So due to his advice as well as the fact that I could barely hold the darned thing in my puny, girly hands, I listened to him.

Fast forward 20+ yrs. There was a used one staring me in the face at my gun club. Nickeled 44. I could hear it calling out to me. I could no longer ignore its cries to be brought home, loved and coddled, so I bought it.

Matter of fact, I only just received the regs for it. My buddy & I fired a total of 20 rounds thru her as is, with no issues. Brought her back home and stripped her down deeper than a field-strip. She was a very, very dirty girl :p

It's a big, clunky, heavy, crude piece of equipment. While a revolver (particularly a Model 29) has refined features & grace & can be held with one hand, the DE beast seems more like a slab of metal. It cannot be held comfortably with one hand without effort for most of us mere mortals.

She won't be going to the range every week, but she will get to stretch her legs. I'm waiting on 44 mag dies so that I can reload for her, otherwise I'll have to sell a kidney to afford shooting her. :p

I'm told that as long as I run full-power, jacketed loads thru her, she'll be fine. Knowing me, I'll prolly be asking around soon enuf for reduced-power loads and swapping out the recoil springs to allow for proper functioning.

I love my unrefined brute. It's plenty more accurate than I am. It will not be leaving my collection, not that most of my acquisitions ever do. But I will be keeping an eye out for a 3-4" barrelled Model 29/629 to keep it company in my safe. Sorta like Beauty & the Beast ;)

I have a model 29 and love it. It is surgically precise and is a blast to go hunting with... (for those of us who actually hunt in the UNITED STATES).

One day, when handgun hunting will once again be permitted in this pussy whipped country of ours, the model 29 will handle most critters you may come across in Canada.

The DE is more of a novelty gun, one of those guns you bring to the range and ask folks if they would like to fire it! LOL
It is huge and rather expensive, but if you are into "Robocop" genre, this may be for you.

i've heard and seen horror stories about the de, esp with handloads- revolvers eat anything, any time- and you're not restricted to jacketeds only- i should doubt if my redhawks have seen a jacketed slug in their lifetimes-and if 1 or2 extra rounds and the supposedly quicker reload time( i say supposedly b/c some guys are pretty quick with a speedloader) justifies the difference in price- and remember that mags cost something as well. speedloaders go for under 20 bucks apiece- i normally carry 4- between that and what's in the gun, that's 30 rounds

I've got both the DE and Raging Bull in .44mag. I love em both and have no horror stories to tell. Great fun at the range. When ever I bring a newbie out shooting I bring both guns and let them have at it. Makes there first time more memorable.

If you want something exotic than S&W is too plain IMO...

I've shot DE and used to have a .44mag Raging Bull both fun guns, you can have a new Raging Bull for ~ $800 so that should be my choice! it's a cool gun and very accuaret! I never had a problem with mine...still miss it and plan on getting another one at some ponit! DE is fun toy as well but between a used black model and a brand new stainless Bull, the latter is a better choice IMO

Desert Eagle XIX .44 Mag in Polished Chrome...hands down. A beautiful piece of hardware. Very heavy, very mean, relatively accurate, 90% reliable, 100% FUN to shoot, turns heads, and makes a BIG fireball :)

The Desert Eagle is a more complexed system in regards to your other selected options. It's a gas operated pistol with rotating bolt (Like AR-15 & Benelli M4) very fun to field strip and clean. Many moving part to clean&lube, nice recoil system too. Generously lube/grease the slide rails and the action with cycle like butter. A super firm grip is required to avoid stove-pipes/FTF's. The odd round will jam (1 round out of box of 50)
There are many different finished to choose from/check DE website, but I love polished chrome. You will love it :) Get in there!

29

Without a doubt S&W mod 29, Raging bull also a good choice, with these 2 there is no loss of brass and a wide selection of loads from wimp to LOOK - OUT. Revolvers still prefered to autos in large bores.

I have two S&W model 29s and a D.E. in 44 magnum. The D.E. is a novelty gun. The S&W will get shot a lot more as it can be used to plink, target shoot, or blow off a little steam.

I would (and have) gone for both. But most people will get the most value out of the S&W. It depends if you fall into "most people".

i never owned any of these guns but basing myself only on looks, i would probably choose the Raging Bull! It just looks damn ###y and is almost half the price of a 629
Now the only option I would choose over the raging bull is a S&W 629 Performance Center with the weigthed barrel, but it is more expensive!

The DE really is a novelty gun and if I ever spent the money on one (and i plan on to eventually) it would have to be in .50

29 if you are buying an all around gun. Deagle if you want a kickass piece of steel. Redhawks, Super Blackhawks and DW's are good choices as well.
