Hello folks, I recently picked up a Marlin XL7 chambered in .270. I had read many good things about these rifles and was excited to pick one up and give it a try. I threw a Leupold VX-1 3-9x40 on it and loaded up some 130 gr. Nosler ballistic tips with 56gr. I4831 and 54gr. of Win760. While at the range I sighted it in tested my loads. Much to my surprise my groups weren't nearly as tight as I wanted them to be.
I am just curious as to what guys are shooting out of their .270's powder and bullet wise.
My old 270 never was never this finicky and I'm getting a little frustrated.

You'r probably gonna have to start from scratch & find what that particular rifle likes . I currently have a Rem 700 & a Win M70 that don't like to share . I usually have pretty good luck with IMR 4064 for 130 grn'ers.

Reloader 22 does almost the same. :)

The first trip to the range to sight in my XL7 gave me a couple 3" groups.

I tried a different load and got this the second time out.

H450? Did you write it incorrectly?? Is it supposed to be 4350?
Thanks for the tips. I'll keep my eyes peeled and test some.

H450, a discontinued powder, is correct, however it is hard to find now.

Of course, the group pictured is the best group ever with the rifle, but it will put all bullet weights under an inch with RE 22 and H4831. I think if you work up to higher loads, you will be pleased. The two you show are quite mild, and IME the 270 is most accurate with top or near top loads.

You seem to be thinking a different powder is the ticket, but more often than not, it's the bullet. Perhaps even the bullet weight. I find the Nosler BT to be very accurate in most guns, but maybe your gun doesn't like them. Try some Hornady sst's or some sierra btsp. If your gun isn't liking them, try 150 grainers. But if you're looking for a good powder, I haven't met a .270 yet that doesn't love 4350 [imr or H].

Pet .270 load is 130 gr Sierra BTSP, H4350 [I don't have it right in front of me how much and I don't want to try 'remembering'] and a CCI 250 primer. I find Federal Brass to be condusive to accurate loads, but the brass doesn't last as long as other brands.
That's my go-to load for any .270, and I've not found a .270 [althoug I've only loaded for about 5] that won't do at least 1.3" groups with that. I don't know about you, but 1.3" as a starting point is not too shaby in my books.

The nosler btips will shoot well....just turn up the heat with H4831 until you are happy with the groups....that will likely happen somewhere in between 58 and 61 grains.

btw I use the same load with btips and sst's and they both shoot really well.

There is hardly any difference at all in those two powders. IMR is only slightly faster.

Just work up the load using basic development principles and you will find what you are looking for.
