I have a serious problem , I've reloaded every thing from .222 up
through, .243, 257 R, .308, 7mm Mag, ,30-06, .303 BR, .30-30 up to .338
and have shell holders, having started with a Pacific C press and then a
RCBS.

I have an old Pacific C press, and the above listed shell holders which
fit the ram head no problem. About 1992, I bought a RCBS Press
with the 0.995" diameter ram. When I bought the latter press, the RCBS,
I also received some type of adopter to take my older non RCBS shell
holders. I am unsure if this was a RCBS part or not. It could have been
made by another company to solve my problem of using the older style
shell holders common to Pacific and other press manufacturers.

This image aboves shows an older SH sitting on top of the RCBS ram.

The above is a close up.

The above diagram is from a RCBS brochure and clearly shows the adaptor that I am missing.

In Moving my stuff from on location to another, I somehow, lost this piece.
So, I have an old Pacific C press, shell holders for it which can not be
used in the much bigger, stronger press. The RCBS press just takes up
bench space. I used it successfully for some 12 years for the heavy work
and used the old Pacific for re priming as I had a better feel on the
up-stroke.

I've tried top no avail to find the solution to my problem, I spent 6
months waiting for your agent here in Ottawa to finally tell me no, he
could not locate the part. The Canadian Distributor, Eastern Ontario
Sales Inc. could not help and I send two very detailed emails to rcbs tech with all of the requisite images shown above. The first reply gave me incorrect information, saying that
"You need part number 9109, Shell Holder Ram. It sells for $25.95. Let
us know if you wish to order. Have a great day! Thank you, Technical Services/ap"

The above response gave me cause to phone the Tech service , when I
explained the problem, then sent another detailed email. In response, I
received a diagram showing the various parts available, giving me no
solution.

With RCBS, I,ve been d:h:

My problem remains. When I bought the press I also bought the
piece that snaps into the RCBS ram head and accepts the smaller diameter
shell holders. It is possible that this piece was made by another
company to solve the problem. But who?
I've spent two years trying to solve this problem.
This forum is my last resort.

Surely I am not the only reloader with an older C style press using the Pacific style shell holders who had used the same shell holders in a RCBS.

Somebody out there must have an answer - Pleasef:P:2:

Will the shell holders fit in your press at all? or do the fit but not stay in the press
In this image here , it looks like you are missing the shell holder retaining spring witch just fits in that slot at the top of the ram

This picture here dose not show an adapter,Your arrow is pointing at that spring I was talking about

I mic'd my shell holders and they were 0.429 as well . Can you tell us what the problem that you are having with the shell holders because they should fit . I think it is the spring thing that you are talking about ?

My Problem

Thanks BCboy but the small shell holders do not fit into the top of the ram.

If you will look at the 2nd image, that of RCBS, there is some thing between the ram and the SH.

John,

I gave them more information in two long emails than I've posted here, twice, 2 phone calls, and I was polite in all communication with them.

I just hope that some of the older guys check in here in the next few days.

I'm amazed RCBS wasn't able to resolve the issue. Did you try emailing them with the problem you're having?

that second image is the ram ,the shell holder is ontop of the ram, there is a shell in the shell holder. what you are seeing is the Channel that is milled into ram (recesesd) for the shell holder retaining spring. If you look at the actual Shellholder in that is in that picture you can see that it is actually in the ram. I took a picture of mine in the exact position

My Problem

BCboy's 2nd post is interesting, BUT, it shows a RCBS shell holder on top of the ram, correct? What I had was an adaptor which fit the ram head and then would take the smaller shell holders.

There is so far not a lot of comment here and I do appreciate the time of those who have posted.

New idea, has anyone a "reloading" user URL group in the states to which I could pose my problem? Or am I still d:h:

My Problem

get any RCBS shellholder milled to fit the other ones...use it as an adapter.you'll lose some stroke but that's about it I think.
My uncle did it with Herter's stuff.

Yes, I was into stuff Herter's too.

So If I were to take an older shell holder into a RCBS dealer, with a decent stock (?!) I should be able to do the same?

Many thanks, will try it.

My Problem

BCboy set me thinking and I found the USA MIDWAY commercial site. I have posed my question to them.

It is also possible that the sheet that I received from RCBS with the various ram head options, that the bottom right adaptorn is what I need.

Do I see a light at the end of the tunnel? I sure hope so.:)

I have an answer.

Go out and buy the 4 or 5 new style shell holders for the RCBS that cover the range of cartridges you listed.

2 years!? Life is short my friend.

My apologies if that comes off as unsympathetic....

Thanks TwoTone. no offense taken. I guess my Scot genes are showing:( . This has been my fall-back position but not doing a lot of reloading, I've made do with the old C press.

But I do think that I am close to resolvin the matter.

Ha! I have similar genes, but I fight it.

My father and brother on the other hand....

Good luck in finding a solution, one way or the other.
