A couple of weeks ago i bought a new Chrony . Last one died after 20 years . I reloaded 30-30 with 3031 and a 150 grain FN bullet . I loaded 15 rounds of 5 different powder charges and got the velocity results i expected . 3 rounds per charge . Nothing to do this weekend so i loaded 25 rounds of the same 5 powder charges . Everything was indentical to the last time as i'm far from new at this . 5 rounds per charge instead of 3 , just something to do . Went out this morning and set the Chrony up at the same distance and i shot to the same place . The sun was in the same place and the temp was the same .
Comparing todays results with the previous ones , every round in every string per powder charge for 5 strings of 5 power charges shot just about 200 fps faster . I changed nothing . I did this 2 years ago with my old Chrony and the results from my old Chrony very , very closely matched the results from the first time out with the new Chrony 2 weeks ago so it looks like the Chrony is just fine . Same gun .
2 weeks ago i had two rounds that didn't register a velocity number so i put the diffuser on and no problem after that or today . Sun was in the same place , low , so i don't know what the diffusers are helping with . I was on the same angle to the sun shooting in the same direction .
Nothing changed except the velocity this morning , by 200 fps . I've been using a Chrony for 20 years . I've been loading for 35 and when i say everything was the same , everything was the same and the new Chrony recorded the same velocity two weeks ago as the old Chrony did two years ago . No difference in brass nor primers nor powder charge nor OAL , nor bullet nor crimp nor powder .
Why did 25 rounds loaded the same as two weeks ago show a 200 fps velocity increase this morning ? Same rifle , a 336 Marlin . I don't get it . Lee dies , factory crimp .
This week i had a factory box of the cheap stuff with me . Federal 150's with the FN bullet . I sent 5 of them over the Chrony . They 5 ranged from 2,505 fps to 2,623 fps . Federal says they shoot 2,390 fps but i don't know what barrel length they use . Mine is 20 inches . I doubt they use less than a 20 inch barrel for testing then posting velocity in a 30-30 . All that tells us is that the results i got with the factory are faster than what Federal publishes .
Where did i get an extra 200 fps .
