My buddy sends me an email yesterday looking for info on a "Pocket Colt" his father in-law has.

Here's the description:
Hexagon, smooth barrel "Pocket Colt" Stagecoach battle on the chamber. Blackpowder, cap and ball, 31 caliber.

The FIL is curious as to what it's worth?

Anybody have any ideas? .

I would say that it is worth taking photos of and posting in your message. At this point I think we can probably agree that it sounds like a revolver.

The 1849 Pocket Colt was a very popular gun and over 300,000 were made,the barrel length could be from 4-6 inches and it could be a 5 or 6 shot cylinder. The roll stamped stagecoach hold-up scene on the cylinder didn't remain clear on many of the originals. The value of these guns is directly related to condition so could be from $500->5,000 +.
