Friend of mines father inherited this from his great, (great?) grandfather. I Don't know what caliber it is. The receiver serial matches the barrel but seems to be missing a rod on the underside (cleaning rod I'd assume). Kudos to the first person that can give me some history on this piece :D

I think you're bang on! Second question. Not that he would ever get rid of it bearing sentimental value in mind, what would one of these fetch in a dollar amount?

300--400 price range is what I see them go for. Ammo is hard to come by unless you convert it to cent're fire

If you want to get thecnical, its a Swiss Vetterli Model 1869/71 in 10.4 mm Rimfire aka .41 swiss.

Send them each a cookie; I hate the sound of a grown man crying!

Vetterlis are fun. Some guys find spare Bolt-shanks for them and make up a centrefire conversion unit from that, with a short firing-pin in the centre of the new Bolt-shank.

THEN you get to make up ammo and shoot it for under $10 a shot and the stuff WORKS.

They were an extremely-accurate rifle for their period, as was just about anything Swiss. Lot of them sold off here very cheaply and at one time it seems every farm had one. God knows where they are now.

Remington made ammunition until 1941, but that is the last that I know of.

Beautiful workmanship and a design that was WAY ahead of its time.

Brass can be made from .348 Winchester or possibly from 8mm Lebel.

Very Nice Toy!

Value? Who cares? It's NEAT!
