JM with a circle is one type, just a JM is another.

If your serial number starts with: 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 00 or 01>up

Then it's JM

JM barrels stopped being proofed (stamped) in the 2nd quarter of 2008. The excess barrel inventory was used up through 2009-2010.

My currentest one .........chit, that a werd?
Anywayzs, it's a 2007 and it's a JM made in New Haven.
The Ilion's arrr not of the JM sort?

My brother (a licensed machinist) just bought a Remlin 'REP' 336ss in 30-30 Win.
He already has a real Marlin 'JM' 336 in 35 Remington and told me the machining and metal work was just as good if not better in the Ilion product as it was in the North Haven product. Of course this is a big generalization to make based on close examination of just 2 firearms.
He gave the wood to metal fitting and finish nod to the JM rifle but not by much.
They were both pretty good for mass production rifles.
He stripped both rifles completely apart before reaching an opinion.

The new rifle should (and likely would) have better machining with regards to the action. They are now produced on modern CNC machines.

The 'JM' Marlin or the 'REP' Remlin rifles trigger can be improved with the wwg 'trigger happy kit' and cycling and shooting operation made less annoying with the bear tooth mercantile 'safety delete' which replaces the useless & redundant cross bolt safety. Muzzle control and the half-#### hammer safety are sufficient. We replaced the hammer spring with the wolff product in our 336. Cycles like a dream.

The trigger can be improved for free by lightly polishing the sear (it's not difficult). The hammer spring mod (Brownells cowboy is cheap) does wonders for the trigger pull as you mentioned.

The "Useless & Redundant" CBS...... Well......It does nothing to make the shooting & cycling more "annoying". Sure some people end up dropping the hammer on it, but some people actually like it (I'm in that boat).
But if it bothers you that much, it can be deleted for free by tightening down the set screw while it's in the fire position.

Can I ask what you like about the redundant cross bolt safety?

And yes, you can do as you noted, tightening down the screw with the cross bolt in the 'off' position. I prefer the BearTooth Mercantile safety delete route...

Cheers
Jay

Guess I got used to firing dads old pre-safety marlin on the pa homestead.
It annoys ME when I squeeze on the trigger and get a click instead of a hole in the target/deer/whatever.
Besides I like the looks of the gun with the safety delete installed.
Muzzle control and the incumbent half #### hammer safety is sufficient for me.

Yup

I use it when unloading the rifle, and when it's slung over my back while crawling through thick timber/rocky terrain.
When they see use as a "truck gun" there tends to be a fair bit of loading/unloading.

I never use it as an excuse for poor muzzle control, and I do primarily use the half #### safety while hunting.

I just never found it as an inconvenience I guess......
I wouldn't pay to have one installed, but having it never bothered me.

*As a side note,
There's a book out there called "Blacktail Secrets" written by a local hunter/gun store owner.
In the book he talks about how one time, while brush hunting with his 44mag 1894, he stumbled and fell down a steep bank. His slung rifle came off his shoulder and when it hit the ground, he figured it must have cocked the hammer.
The rifle proceeded to slide down the bank after him and got caught in some roots along the way, the trigger got pulled by the debris, and the hammer dropped........ on the CBS.

He stated the rifle was hung on the roots, pointed right at him, with a loaded round in the chamber.

No creep in the wwg trigger and very crisp let off.
Worth every nickel.
The inexperienced should stay away from messing with sears.
For $20 the wwg trigger happy kit is the way to go.
The wolff spring kit (brownells) is fantastic.
The wwg bear-proof ejector is good too. The ejects fall right at my feet.
I've installed a lot of this stuff mostly on pretty rough early made (before 2015) Remlins brought to me for smoothing out.
A 5 year old kid could install this stuff. It's pretty idiot proof.
I've seen a couple of the 2017 run of Remlins.
The guns are getting better every year.
The rough tool marked machining of the early Remlins is gone.
The new REPs I've stripped down and inspected with my magnifying glass are better machined than most of the old JMs.
The new gun receivers and parts are CNC machined from blue prints and it shows.
We should be able to call the Ilion guns real Marlins very soon.
Just love a success story. ;)
The shadow checkering of a couple of years ago is gone and the checkering I'm seeing on the new ones has some depth to it.
The w/m fitting is noticeably better. You can't shove a toonie in the w/m gaps any more. ;)
