Need help in valuation of Colt Frontier 6

I have a friend who's not a CGN member with a bunch of Colts. This one is interesting due to its engraving so he'd like to know what we have here. Any help in regard to value as well as what we have here (engraving style etc.) would be appreciated.

It's a Colt Frontier 6 in .44 WCF with a 5.5" barrel. Serial # 90###. Bore is worn but there is rifling left. The gun has been packed in a holster a long, long time and as such has worn off the words "Frontier Six" where it would have been, as well as other chrome plating wear from holster use. If this gun could only talk.....
Rumour has it that it was purchased by the previous owner from a long-time sherriff???

Well I'll take a poke, Frontier six-shooters with factory engraving, if this is factory engraving can go for over $10K in the USA, depending on alot of factors ,like letter, any historical ref., any of these factors could drive the price way beyond that. Problem here is a) these guns go for more in the US b)condition(wear) is more then what is usually seen on a gun of this significance(that is for sale). Very early Black powder frame, extent of wear I can't determine but from what i can see, if all orig......$7K...there....flame away!!!
 
tell him to get a colt letter it will be worth the $300 on that gun.
if the letter says its factory engraved its worth alot.
not antique status in Canada in 44 40 surfer365 is right there but its a antique by age and is also antique both ways in the USA.
could be worth more than 7k.
thats why he should get the colt letter
 
Thanks for the input guys. Colts are not my thing (expertise wise) but I knew you would come through.
The gun is registered, as well as the other cap and ball models with this collection. I guess the last owner wasn't taking any chances when doing so. Present handler is seeking a Colt factory letter so we will see if it is in there records. He will be selling these for the last owners family, he is just hoping to get a fair price up here instead of sending them south.
The other models I hate to say I didn't pay much attention to:redface: but a nice one with lots of blueing had a navel (?) battle scene on the cylinder.
Forgot to mention in first post that we believe DOM to be 1884 if this helps.
Your numbers seem to be in the ballpark with what we are hearing out here.

1883 manufacture, and one of only 27 in Nickel with a 5.5" barrel produced that year if factory engraved.

Beautiful gun, but too bad about the holster wear and the fact that it's not an antique up here.

Unfortunately we were thinking the same thing. When/if it goes south the disappointment coming from fellow Canadians will be loud but if the shoe was on the other foot the results would be the same. We wouldn't mind a home town discount, but there is a limit.
