Hi guys, I have a 1974 BLR .308 that I want to put a 1" tube on. The rifle has 4 holes in the top (2 groups of 2, don't know what the threads are) but all I find in the store are rings that go on rails. what are my options?
Those holes are for bases and the rings go on the appropriate bases. Talk to someone knowledgeable at a good gun shop and they will show you your options. Take your gun with you to get the proper sized screws.
The scope goes in rings that hold it and attach to the mounts, the mounts are attached to the rifle by screws that go into those holes.
If a 1974 BLR was drilled and tapped by the factory, it is most likely that it was done for standard Weaver mounts. If it was done by a gunsmith after it was sold retail, it is also most likely that it was done for standard Weaver mounts. A set of mounts will normally come with screws. Take it to a gun shop to compare the distance between the holes to the appropriate mounts. If there isn't one close enough, you may have to order some mounts to try and hope if they don't fit you can send them back. Here's a chart of Weaver mounts that will identify their mounts for the BLR:
Once you have the mounts identified you select the rings. Weaver makes rings to fit Weaver-type mounts. Some other brands make rings to fit Weaver-type mounts. Some other brands make rings that only fit their own mounts, if you like their features you need to find out whether their mounts fit your rifle's existing holes or whether there is room for any different holes needed.
