Like the title says, I'm thinking of purchasing my first handgun. I'm looking for something center fire (i reload already), preferably DA, fairly accurate, i have big hands so something that fits nice, I think I would prefer a semi-auto.

I will only be using it to punch paper at the range. My budget is around 500 or less to start with, I can add on to it later. I was thinking about a 1911 variant but I think I would like a bigger mag cap. I don't know very much about handguns yet, I've shot a couple and I liked it so I think it's time I get one.

Any information and suggestions are appreciated. I've looked a bit in the EE but until I decide what I want for sure I don't want to make any offers.

My first pistol I bought was a 22 since it cost less to shoot, but If you already reload you can already go to a centerfire. My first pistol was a Glock 17 bought pratically new for around 600$ on the EE, and it is still my favorite pistol that I bring to the range everytime. For you budget a Glock is a great gun since you can always modify it when you have more money to put in your hobby, and you can order parts very cheaply

The biggest mag cap here is ten round, even double stack was pinned to ten rounds as such a 1911( 7-8) or 9mm(10). Anyway if you like 1911, you can get a Armco tuned Norinco, the gun should work fine right away and trouble free, there are many things that you can learn with 1911 and slowly upgrade with aftermarket parts when need. This will fit your bill nicely. Or you can look at a well used CZ 75B or Glock 17 for a little more.

thanks guys. I didn't know that double stacks had to be pinned, I guess I need to read up on some regs. Will the 1911 pinch the webbing between my thunb and index finger if my grip is a little high?

I just looked on the EE at glocks and they're a bit out of my price range.

Get a beavertail safety and you will be fine with hammer bite. I would second the Armco tuned Norc 1911, they are a great value and under your $500 limit, before taxes anyway.

No loss on the Glocks, they are overrated anyway.:D

Just kidding Glock people.

Before you buy something I would recommend that you go to a gunshop or two and handle a few pistols, even better shoot a few. Fit is very personal and everyone is different. I have tried Glocks and don't like them at all, while others love them. I find the 1911 frame and trigger suits me much better. You may find the opposite.

You can't go wrong with a CZ75B even if you have to buy used. A 22 is good to as the ammo is cheap and they are gret fun to practice.

$500 dollar budget? Your choice is limited to some Norinco's which I would recommend. My 1911 Police model was my first semi auto and is great. About 3000 rounds through her, and I have upgraded a few things. Beauty is you can slowly add to the 1911 with tons of parts available. You can get a second gen Glock 17 used for around $500. They are awesome, and 9mm is gonna be a little cheaper than .45 acp. Another really good option and one of the best buys on the market is a Ruger SR9. For a first pistol it is pretty simple, and reliable. I loved mine when I had it, but I just like the Glock better.

why not consider a revolver?
it's easier to use a revolver (i think)
they fit big hands
and if you buy a .357 you could use 38 for cheaper plinking

Buy the Glock 17 in the EE for $600.

You won't regret it.

Please go to a range and try some different models. If you have a dealer in your area, go and see some and handle them. Choosing a handgun is very personal, what I like and can handle, may not be the best fit for you. Suggestions are fine, but in reality, go and shoot some different types and then make your descision. Enjoy your hunt.

I'm fairly new to the shooting community. I purchased a Norinco 1911 9mm. I liked it until I got my CZ75B in .40. You can get a Norinco for less than $500 at Marstar. The Norinco shoots straight so far. I have shot about 800 rounds so far. No problems with pinching shooting the Norinco but it can be a little tricky to strip and reassemble.

You will not find a decent 1911 for $500. Also, most 1911s are chambered in .45ACP, which is an expensive round compared to 9mm .

I suggest you get something like a used S&W M&P, or maybe save up some money and buy something better in a couple of months. Personally, I would stay away from Chinese pistols, as tempting as the price may be.

You should easily be able to pick up a used Glock-17 in the EE for $500, if you don't mind a 2nd gen or early 3rd gen... just check regularly :)

...oh, and if you do decide you want a 1911, don't listen to the naysayers re the Norinco 1911's... I've owned a couple, and they've been excellent guns
