Need Help playing the Glock numbers game!

Hey guys I'm in need of some help from the glock guys,

I have a few pistols in 9mm but now I'm thinking of buying one in 40 or 45 cal I've never owned a glock but am thinking this will be the make. I'm just not sure which one, not being a glock man myself I have no idea which one is the best 17,19,GEN 3,GEN 4, etc, etc, these numbers can be a little confusing. I assume that its the same as other model #'s of firearms but I know some models are alot better than others. Can you please give me some info on which one you would buy and why.

Glock 17 is your standard-issue glock. Gen 3 or 4 is your "version', mostly personal-preference on the features added/removed.

Glock 19 is a sub-compact. Officially prohibited when they hit our shores, until someone re-barrels them to a 106mm barrel (stock is 97mm IIRC).


Both are 9mm.

the 19 is the compact

the 26 is the sub-compact 9mm

If you're looking for a Glock, a good handling .40 then go with the G23 Gen 4 compact with the adjustable backstraps, RTF frame and reversible mag release if you are a lefty. There were some issues with the Gen 4's when they first came out but all the problems have been resolved. Bear in mind that the compacts and sub compacts are more expensive than their full size counterparts.

The ones worth looking at

G17 9mm/ G22 40s&w is your standard glock and good for IPSC production level
G34 9mm is the best for range fun and IPSC open "not allowed in production level :("
G21 45acp is a fantasic gun and has a larger grip as its double stack 45acp "full 10rds"

Lastly go with a GEN4
-better mag release
-better grip texture
-grip can be adjusted

Tough to get good advice on this kind of thing...post count is not connected to round count and lots of people will give you advice despite having no clue about shooting and little knowledge of the guns other than where they were able to buy one.

The G17 and G19 are both good guns - those and the G20 are probably the best Glocks from a reliability standpoint. The .40 Glocks have had some issues - particularly with a light attached.

The G21 is better in Gen 4 guise than it was in Gen 3 IMO. But the 9 and 10mms are the best of the Glocks. If you are set on a .40 or .45 I think the M&Ps are better in those calibers, particularly the .45.

They sorted out the 40 S&W light problem with the GEN4 Recoil spring :)
 
I had a glock 17, the grip felt too long and loose in my hand (medium sized hands), I had a p229 that felt awesome in my hand so I thought I'd try out a 19 and I fell in love. Fits so so tightly and nice in my hand. I've never had any issues with my 9mm glocks. They just work. Go with a gen 4 fo sho.
 
I own two Glock 17 Gen 4's and they work flawlessly. I also carried a Glock 22 professionally and can say that is what sold me on the Glock brand. They are the best gun in the world for going bang every time you pull the trigger without any significant fuss or maintenance or even cleaning. You should still keep your Glock clean, but its not a requirement for the gun to function.

As for accuracy, you should not expect to shoot targets at 100 yards easily with a glock, that's not the intention of this firearm. It is a gun that is intended to shoot regardless of whether it is full of mud and sand, hasn't been cleaned etc. You can easily hit a person sized target at 40 yards with every shot if you are proficient and take your time, but it really excels at targets under 20 yards where a handgun is generally intended to be used in a fight. A gun with tighter tolerances such as a custom built 1911 might make shots at longer distances easier, but would be a bit more prone to jamming, more sensitive to ammo type and need to be cleaned more often.
 
I have a gen4 glock 17 and I love it.

It's not pretty, its not fancy, and to my mind it is certainly not what one might call 'ergonomically pleasing' - in fact, I kind of think it feels like I'm holding a brick.

What I really love about it is knowing... that's KNOWING, that every time I pull the trigger, it's going to do exactly what I expect it to, and I never ever have to stress out about pulling the trigger and hearing *click*. That peace of mind and confidence makes up for all of its perceived shortcomings. To me anyway.
 
My very first pistol was a gen4 Glock 22. It has thousands or rounds through it and it works flawlessly. I love my Glock and wouldn't hesitate to tell anyone to buy one. I have never mounted a light or laser on it, but this thread was the first I have heard about that issue.
 
I have lights mounted on both my Glocks from time to time, and have never had an issue. On the first generation of Glocks that had rails there was an early issue with mounting heavy lights or other heavy items, but I don't think that has been an issue for many years. There are numerous police agencies who carry Glocks with mounted lights as their primary firearm.
