Hey guys,

I believe i'll be winning the dumbass of the day award, but I need some help.

I forgot to put case lube on the inside of my case and went to resize it. When I lowered the ram, the case came out fine, but, it pulled the decaping pin/rod out of the die, while I was removing the pin/rod from the case, the decaping pin itself bent just a bit.

Is it reparable? or should I just toss it and see if i can find buy another one?

My other question is, Is there a proper way to set that pin? I.e adjusting that colleted screw at the top?

As you can probably tell I'm very new at reloading and have a lot left to learn.

P.S I'm using Lee dies, in a .308

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you're using Lee dies, the pin is part of the expander and can't be replaced. You need a whole new expander/decapper center piece. By all means try and straighten it first, but you might want to find a replacement now that it's been weakened.

As far as adjusting the tension on it with the collet on top, you've got to crank it down pretty tight. That doesn't mean putting your foot on the edge of the press and giving it all you've got. The idea is to get it tight enough that it doesn't move up and down when you're resizing, but will move up if you jam the pin into something.

Anyway, get out the q-tips and a bit of oil and lube the inside of the case neck slightly before ramming the expander/decapper into it.

Call Lee and tell them its bent. I bent the one for my .303 dies on a berdan primer that slipped through my sorting. They sent me a new one.

Yep do not feel bad, over the last bunch of I guess 20 years I had more than one stuck and busted a few pins, and rods, in every die you could think of! Just bent on 2 weeks ago in a 243 frigging spent primer fell in the case some how and I crunched her! lol oh well as above it happens. Sometimes they stick so hard you pull teh back off of the case so get your self a RCBs stuck case remover drill and tap!!! they work great. And yes it will happen again

YOu can try to bend it straight if its a hunting gun, you may be ok. But they normaly break after time. If you have a second set of dies for the time being you could replace the rod to decaping pin assembly, pain in teh ass but could work if its the same case type

Well, I've managed to bend it back without breaking it off, and finished sizing/decaping the the other 19 round without issue. I'll start to look for a new one but for the time being this one seems to be working great.

I think it was (or at least would like to think) a combination of the colleted adjustment at the top not being tight enough, and me not lubing the inside of the neck. So hopefully I can avoid buying another 2 pack of dies just to replace the one resizer, but I'm certain you can buy replacement pin/rod assembly, or call up Lee.

Anyways, thanks for you help guys

Dan
