I'm looking for help on selecting the proper rings and bases to fit a Vortex Viper HS 4-16x50 scope to my new(to me) Sako A7 Roughtech Pro 300WM. I also need to figure out what rings I need to get so that the scope will fit the lowest on the rifle.

Personally, I'm not a fan of going down to the local sportsman shop and having them select whatever they have left on the shelf that will fit and then convincing me that it will be fine. I'm hoping that with the experience of the people on this site, I can make an informed choice.

I was thinking that as this rifle is chambered in 300WM the bases and rings should be fairly heavy duty steel, instead of aluminum alloy. I've been thinking of Sako Optilocks. According to the Sako website http://www.sako.fi/sites/default/files/Optilockring.pdf, I could get away with extra low rings as the front objective lens is 50mm and max is listed for this size as 55mm. But, does anyone have real world experience of this setup working? I would hate to buy these rings and have it not fit.

Thanks for your help,

Vortex precision matched rings .87" will be low. Email vortex and tell them your setup and they will recommend
I have a sendero sf 2 with a vortex viper hs 4-16x44 and they told me a 1 piece still rail with .97" PMR to give me enough room for flip caps on my scope

I like the Sako Optilocks on my Sako rifles. A buddy bought the same rifle you have last year and mounted a Leupold VX2 4-12x40 scope. He ordered the Burris Signature rings and base setup. He got the rifle and Rings/bases from Cableas and scope from WSS (they had a great sale on Leupold last July). You would need the medium rings is my guess. In the Sako Optilocks you might get away with LOWS. Maybe look into the Ringmount rings as well from Sako.

You are going to want medium or high rings. The rifle ejects the casing up and to the left. Low rings will cause a jam. Also you will need a bit more room for a top load. I had low rings on mine and it would not eject a 30-06 reliably. Went with mediums and they seem to work but hit the scope turret from time to time.

Here's the setup with medium burris rings and a 40mm bell.
