Need help to choose a first rifle! Hunting/Target shooting

A .22 is a good place to start, no recoil to speak of, the girlfriend will handle it with no worries and you wont being shelling out wads of cash for ammo!!!! my .2 cents

Wow, I haven't looked at the reply of my post in a while and I didn't expect that many answer! Thank you all for all these information!

Right now I am still waiting for my Possession and Acquisition Licence to come in, but as soon as I have it I'll have a look in the store, starting in the used section.

Like I said, I love bolt action rifle, but the 10/20 modability seems like tons of fun (but could lead to much more expense in the long run!)

And for the hunting part, I already know that I'll mostly use a 12/20/410, but carrying a .22 still would be fun.

Once again thank you all for your help!

"Right now, I am hesitating between .17 HMR or .22 LR"

Spend a bit more and get a CZ 455 in .22LR. You can get the .17 barrel later on the 455 series and have the best of both worlds.
The 455 Lux is my next purchase.

Get a Rugar 10/22 if you can find one..... I bought one as my first rifle and i couldnt be happier with it! Cheep to shoot, not picky with ammo ,accurate and my wife shoots it with ease as well. Get yourself a 10/22 you won't regret it.:D

The bolt action will be able to handle short, long, and long rifle. The semi-autos not so much. If your girlfriend wants to try shooting without the loud noise, then pick up a box of .22 shorts. There will be hardly any noise. A handclap would be louder.
The Long rifles could be worked up to then and with a bolt action you won't waste so much ammo "spraying and praying". You'll spend more time getting the basics down and concentrating on hitting what you are aiming for.
Get the basic skills down first, then work your way up to a semi-auto.
My $.02
