Need help to figure this out

Ok, one thing to consider is leupold windage adjustable bases. First, optically center scope cross hair by using a mirror. Then bore site as usual. Then once on paper, make sure the scope is in line with the rifle using the 100m plum bob method (ie insure vertical line at 100m. Adjust scope 6" up and group, then 12" low and group. if the group is not on the line then loosten the rings and turn the scope towards the group). I have seen several savage rifles with offset needed. You may want to get some burris zee rings with inserts as well in concert with the windage adjustable bases.

I would go the adjustable bases for the easiest quick and most economical route. My 2c.

I have heard of the odd instance of a bent barrel post install. Yes, it will be interesting to hear the results of the repair.

Instead of trying to level the scope by sight, use a set of bubble levels. 25 bucks on Amazon for set of 2 Weaver scope levels. I would rather wait a week for the correct tool than waste ammo, time and your patience trying to do it without correct tool for the job.

Actually bsand, when you look into the plumbob process the correct method is as described, and is worth the time some F classers take on their rifles.
Potato tomato. A bubble level relies on the accuracy of the placement of the levels and assumes level.

IMHO and through my practice the adjustment to the true centerline is the most accurate method for canting your scope. Spend your time and money as you see fit. I would think 8-10 shots ($7.50 by my reloads) to verify cant is worth the shots taken and provides you exact confidence in the field. My 2c.

I saw it. Forwarded it on to my buddy.

I guess you skipped over post #12.
You are not the only one with this issue.
Mine has been back to the Savage repair depot since April.
Others have been waiting since last fall.
I hope whoever sold it to you will take it back but neither I nor others in the thread I provided a link to have been successful in doing that.
Best of luck.

Update. My buddy called SFRC and they will replace it. They agree with those that have posted on this thread that it is a known issue. Great customer service!

were all of the 3ft off hits at least grouping nicely, or were they spread all over?
That might help narrow down crooked barrel vs fubar rifling etc.
either way good to know its being taken care of.

Mine grouped 5 shots 0.5", 30 moa high. According to the Savage repair center the barrel is not bent but from what Savage told him a replacement barrel will solve the problem.
